Energetic neutral atom (ENA) models typically require post-processing routines to convert the distributions of plasma and H atoms into ENA maps. Here we investigate how two kinetic-MHD models of the heliosphere (the BU and Moscow models) manifest in modeled ENA maps using the same prescription and how they compare with Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) observations. Both MHD models treat the solar wind as a single-ion plasma for protons, which include thermal solar wind ions, pick-up ions…

The Confinement of the Heliosheath Plasma by the Solar Magnetic Field as Revealed by Energetic Neutral Atom Simulations
Traditionally, the solar magnetic field has been considered to have a negligible effect in the outer regions of the heliosphere. Recent works have shown that the solar magnetic field may play a
A small and round heliosphere suggested by magnetohydrodynamic modelling of pick-up ions
As the Sun moves through the surrounding partially ionized medium, neutral hydrogen atoms penetrate the heliosphere, and through charge exchange with the supersonic solar wind, create a population of
Heliospheric energetic neutral atoms: Non-stationary modelling and comparison with IBEX-Hi data
The Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) has been measuring fluxes of the Energetic Neutral Atoms (ENAs) using the IBEX-Hi (0.3 -- 6 keV) instrument since 2008. We have developed a numerical
Globally Distributed Energetic Neutral Atom Maps for the “Croissant” Heliosphere
A recent study by Opher et al. (2015) suggested the heliosphere has a "croissant" shape, where the heliosheath plasma is confined by the toroidal solar magnetic field. The "croissant" heliosphere is
Consequences of Treating the Solar Magnetic Field as a Dipole on the Global Structure of the Heliosphere and Heliosheath
We investigate the effect of including the heliospheric current sheet on global modeling of the heliosphere. Due to inherent numerical dissipation in the current handling of the heliospheric current
The Effects of a κ-Distribution in the Heliosheath on the Global Heliosphere and ENA Flux at 1 AU
In this paper we investigate heliosheath energetic neutral atom (ENA) fluxes at keV energies, by assuming that the heliosheath proton distribution can be approximated using a κ-distribution. The
Strength of the Termination Shock Inferred from the Globally Distributed Energetic Neutral Atom Flux from IBEX
In this study, we estimate the heliospheric termination shock (HTS) compression ratio at multiple directions in the sky from a quantitative comparison of the observed and simulated inner heliosheath
Interstellar Neutral Gas Species and Their Pickup Ions inside the Heliospheric Termination Shock. Ionization Rates for H, O, Ne, and He
Solar ionizing factors are responsible for modulation of interstellar neutral gas and its derivative populations inside the heliosphere. We provide an overview of the current state of knowledge about
Solar Cycle of Imaging the Global Heliosphere: Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) Observations from 2009–2019
NASA’s Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) mission has operated in space for a full solar activity cycle (Solar Cycle 24), and IBEX observations have exposed the global three-dimensional structure
Magnitude and direction of the local interstellar magnetic field inferred from Voyager 1 and 2 interstellar data and global heliospheric model
In this Letter, we provide constraints on the direction and magnitude of the pristine (i.e., unperturbed by the interaction with the Sun) local interstellar magnetic field. The constraints are based
