In this paper, by using Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theorem, we obtain a formula for the signature of a flat symplectic vector bundle over a surface with boundary, which is related to the Toledo invariant of a surface group representation in the real symplectic group and the Rho invariant on the boundary. As an application, we obtain a Milnor-Wood type inequality for the signature. In particular, we give a new proof of the Milnor-Wood inequality for the Toledo invariant in the case of closed… Expand

Higgs bundles and surface group representations in the real symplectic group
In this paper, we study the moduli space of representations of a surface group (that is, the fundamental group of a closed oriented surface) in the real symplectic group Sp(2n, R). The moduli spaceExpand
Maximal Representations of Surface Groups: Symplectic Anosov Structures
Let G be a connected semisimple Lie group such that the associ- ated symmetric space X is Hermitian and let Γg be the fundamental group of a compact orientable surface of genus g ≥ 2. We survey theExpand
Surface group representations with maximal Toledo invariant
Abstract We study representations of compact surface groups on Hermitian symmetric spaces and characterize those with maximal Toledo invariant. To cite this article: M. Burger et al., C. R. Acad.Expand

Abstract For a closed, oriented, odd dimensional manifold X, we define the rho invariant ρ(X,${\cal E}$,H) for the twisted odd signature operator valued in a flat hermitian vector bundle ${\cal E}$,Expand
Bounds for characteristic numbers of flat bundles
I. A well-known theorem of J. Milnor [8] states that on an oriented surface of genus h any flat Sl(2,~)-bundle has Euler number of numerical value at most h-]. Here "flat" means that there exists aExpand
Maximal Volume Representations are Fuchsian
AbstractWe prove a volume-rigidity theorem for Fuchsian representations of fundamental groups of hyperbolic k-manifolds into Isom $$\mathbb{H}^n$$. Namely, we show that if M is a complete hyperbolicExpand
The gromov norm of the Kaehler class of symmetric domains
Let D be bounded symmetric domain of rank p, and let o9 be the KRhler form of its Bergmann metric, where the metric is normalized so that the minimum holomorphic sectional curvature is 1. I fX is aExpand
Singular Homology Theory
The purpose of this chapter is to introduce the singular homology theory of an arbitrary topological space. Following the definitions and a proof of homotopy invariance, the essential computationalExpand
Novikov's higher signature and families of elliptic operators

Cyclic surgery, degrees of maps of character curves, and volume rigidity for hyperbolic manifolds
This paper proves a theorem about Dehn surgery using a new theorem about PSL2C character varieties. Confirming a conjecture of Boyer and Zhang, this p aper shows that a small hyperbolic knot in aExpand
