Deaf people use systems for communication based on sign language and fingerspelling. Manual spelling or fingerspelling is based on the alphabet, where each letter is represented by an unique movement of the hand. Hand-shapes corresponding to letter of the alphabet can be characterized using appearance and depth images. The fusion of visual and shape cues is a very promising approach.
