Sixty-six consecutive patients, admitted to St. Vincent's Hospital, Melbourne, with sigmoid volvulus, fell into two groups, 60 without and six with acquired megacolon. In the former group, flatus tube decompression was usually successful, and sigmoid resection provided a cure.
