It is shown how the use of the Kerr - Schild coordinate system can greatly simplify the formulation of the geodesic equation of the Schwarzschild solution. An application of this formulation to the numerical computation of the aspect of a non-rotating black hole is presented. The generalization to the case of the Kerr solution is also presented. 0470B, 9760L
Stability of circular geodesics in equatorial plane of Kerr spacetime
We analyze the stability of circular geodesics for timelike as well as null geodesics of the Kerr BH spacetime with rotation parameter on the equatorial plane by Lyapunov stability analysis. Also, we
A dynamical system's approach to Schwarzschild null geodesics
The null geodesics of a Schwarzschild black hole are studied from a dynamical system's perspective. Written in terms of Kerr–Schild coordinates, the null geodesic equation takes on the simple form of
Shadow of the magnetically and tidally deformed black hole
We consider a simple model of a black hole surrounded by a toroidal structure and experiencing deformation due to magnetic field and the tidal force. For this system we construct the shadows of

In this paper we study some features of the Reissner–Nordström metric both from an analytic and a visual point of view. We perform an accurate ray tracing and study of null geodesics in various
Strong-field gravitational lensing by black holes
In this thesis we study aspects of strong-field gravitational lensing by black holes in general relativity, with a particular focus on the role of integrability and chaos in geodesic motion. We first
Shadow of a Schwarzschild black hole surrounded by a Bach–Weyl ring
We have studied the shadows of a Schwarzschild black hole surrounded by a Bach–Weyl ring through the backward ray-tracing method. The presence of Bach–Weyl ring leads to that the photon dynamical
From Black Holes to Cosmology : The Universe in the Computer
I discuss some aspects of the use of computers in Relativity, Astrophysics and Cosmology. For each section I provide two examples representative of the field, including gravitational collapse, black

We present an implementation of a ray tracing code in the Schwarzschild metric. We aim at building a numerical code with a correct implementation of both special (aberration, amplification and
Half century of black-hole theory: From physicists' purgatory to mathematicians' paradise
Although implicit in the discovery of the Schwarzschild solution 40 years earlier, the issues raised by the theory of what are now known as black holes were so unsettling to physicists of Einstein’s
Measuring black hole spin by the continuum-fitting method: effect of deviations from the Novikov-Thorne disc model
The X-ray spectra of accretion discs of eight stellar mass black holes have been analysed to date using the thermal continuum-fitting method, and the spectral fits have been used to estimate the spin

Global structure of the Kerr family of gravitational fields
The Kerr family of solutions of the Einstein and Einstein-Maxwell equations is the most general class of solutions known at present which could represent the field of a rotating neutral or
The Optical Appearance of a Star Orbiting an Extreme Kerr Black Hole
Geometrical optics is used to analyze the propagation of high-frequency radiation emitted by a point source in a circular orbit in the equatorial plane of an extreme Kerr metric black hole. Both the
Image of a spherical black hole with thin accretion disk.
Black hole accretion disks are currently a topic of widespread interest in astrophysics and are supposed to play an important role in a number of high-energy situations. An investigation of the
A Comparison of Whitehead's and Einstein's Formulæ
IN Whitehead's theory of gravitation, as in Einstein's, the tracks of particles in a gravitational field are determined by the condition that a certain integral taken along the track is stationary.
The Mass-spectrum of Indium
SINCE the last report on the results of the massspectrograph (NATURE, September 22) the work with that instrument has been very disappointing. Owing partly to the capricious behaviour of the
