Habits are repetitive behaviors that become ingrained with practice, routine, and repetition. The more we repeat an action, the stronger our habits become. Behavioral and clinical neuroscientists have become increasingly interested in this topic because habits may contribute to aspects of maladaptive human behavior, such as compulsive behavior in psychiatry. Numerous studies have demonstrated that habits can be induced in otherwise healthy rats by simply overtraining stimulus–response behaviors…

Data lend support to the hypothesis that stress occurring during development can have lasting effects on the balance between goal-directed behavior and stimulus–response habits in humans.

The findings highlight the importance of the role of moderating variables such as individual differences in stress and anxiety when studying the experimental induction of habits in humans and suggest a moderating effect of the affective component of stress on the impact of training over habits.
Habitual Behavior Is Goal-Driven
- Psychology, BiologyPerspectives on psychological science : a journal of the Association for Psychological Science

It is shown that habitual behavior is sensitive to changes in goal properties (reward contingencies), namely goal value and its expectancy of attainment, and there is no need to postulate purposeless behavior.
Context, attention, and the switch between habit and goal-direction in behavior
- PsychologyLearning & behavior

New results suggest that actions may transition to habit after extended practice when conditions encourage reduced attention to the behavior, and that goal-direction can be restored by several environmental manipulations, including exposure to unexpected reinforcers or context change.

The findings suggest that smokers do not differ from controls in goal-directed versus habitual control, and individual differences in nicotine dependence within smokers were positively associated with habitual responding after appetitive instrumental learning.

It is proposed that response-time (RT) switch cost after operant training can be used as a new, reliable marker for the operation of the habit system in humans and shown that RT switch cost demonstrates the properties that would be expected of a habitual behavior.
