Abstract The shear moduli of macroisotropic polycrystals with crystallites of cubic symmetry have been calculated for all elemental solids for which single crystal elastic constant data are available by solving a cubic equation given by Kroner [J. Engng Mech. Div. Am. Soc. civ. Engrs 108, 889 (1980)]. The values of the shear moduli so obtained invariably lie between the corresponding Hashin-Shtrikman bounds and agree with the available experimental results in most cases.
