Recent findings suggest that sexual orientation has an early neurodevelopmental basis. Handedness, a behavioral marker of early neurodevelopment, has been associated with sexual orientation in some studies but not in others. The authors conducted a meta-analysis of 20 studies that compared the rates of non-right-handedness in 6,987 homosexual (6,182 men and 805 women) and 16,423 heterosexual (14,808 men and 1,615 women) participants. Homosexual participants had 39% greater odds of being non…

Figures from this paper

Extreme right-handedness, older brothers, and sexual orientation in men.
TLDR
An elevated rate of extreme right-handedness was found in gay or bisexual men relative to heterosexual men, and it was demonstrated that older brothers moderate the relationship between handedness and sexual orientation.
Fraternal Birth Order and Extreme Right-Handedness as Predictors of Sexual Orientation and Gender Nonconformity in Men
TLDR
There was evidence for a relationship among handedness, sexual orientation, and CGN, and mediation analysis revealed that handedness was associated with sexual orientation directly and also indirectly through the mediating factor of CGN.
Fraternal Birth Order, Handedness, and Sexual Orientation in a Chinese Population
TLDR
The results showed that homosexual women are more likely to be non-right-handed than heterosexual women, regardless of how sexual orientation was defined, whereas bisexual women areMore likely to been non- right-handedthan heterosexual women whenSexual orientation was assessed via sexual attraction and sexual identity.
Birth Order, Sibling Sex Ratio, Handedness, and Sexual Orientation of Male and Female Participants in a BBC Internet Research Project
TLDR
The results yielded some evidence confirming prior findings that non-right-handedness is associated with homosexuality in men and women, that older brothers increase the odds of homosexuals in men, and that the effect of older brothers on sexual orientation is limited to right-handed men.
Sexual Orientation and Cognitive Ability: A Multivariate Meta-Analytic Follow-Up
TLDR
Results support the cross-sex shift hypothesis which predicts that homosexual men perform in the direction of heterosexual women in sex differentiated cognitive domains, but the type of task and cognitive domain tested is critical.
Interaction of birth order, handedness, and sexual orientation in the Kinsey interview data.
TLDR
The results demonstrated that handedness moderates the relationship between older brothers and sexual orientation, and suggest that biological explanations of men's sexual orientation are likely relevant across time, as the Kinsey data comprise an older cohort relative to modern samples.

TLDR
Rates of non–right-handedness were virtually identical for heterosexual men and women, suggesting that sex differences in handedness may result from higher rates of homosexuality in men, and within groups, handedness showed a number of weak but statistically significant associations with sex-typed occupational preferences, self–ascribed masculinity, and self-ascribed femininity, but not with instrumentality or expressiveness.
The Cognitive, Behavioral, and Personality Profiles of a Male Monozygotic Triplet Set Discordant for Sexual Orientation
TLDR
The view that the prenatal hormonal environment may have enduring effects on selected behavioral traits is supported, as consistent differences were found between the 2 heterosexual triplets and the 1 homosexual cotriplet.
Relationships Among Childhood Sex-Atypical Behavior, Spatial Ability, Handedness, and Sexual Orientation in Men
Moderate support was obtained in a sample of 101 gay, bisexual, and heterosexual males for the perinatal hormone theory, which hypothesizes that attenuated levels of androgens during critical periods
Biodemographic and Physical Correlates of Sexual Orientation in Men
TLDR
It is found that the familiality for male sexual orientation decreased with relatedness, i.e., when moving from first-degree to second-degree relatives, and, contrary to some previous research, no evidence that maleSexual orientation is transmitted predominantly through the maternal line is found.

Left-handedness in male-to-female transsexuals.
TLDR
Handedness provides an accessible behavioral marker that may clarify the origin of disturbed gender identity and two sources of increased sinistrality allow us to better understand prenatal and perinatal stressors.

TLDR
Results replicated previously reported sexdifferences between the HT men and women and the dissociation in sex-atypicality between lesbians and gay men is discussed in relation to neurobiological factors related to the development of both sex-dimorphic cognitive ability and sexual orientation.
Laterality, sexual orientation, and immune system functioning: is there a relationship?
TLDR
It is concluded that increased left-sidedness is more likely in homosexual men as a group, but laterality cannot be used to differentiate homosexual men further into categories that vary in their susceptibility to immune disorders.
Neurohormonal functioning and sexual orientation: a theory of homosexuality-heterosexuality.
TLDR

TLDR
The findings indirectly support the hypothesis of Geschwind and Galaburda (1985a, 1985b) that sexual orientation and handedness may be linked, both possibly influenced prenatally by testosterone.
Biodemographic comparisons of homosexual and heterosexual men in the kinsey interview data
TLDR
Results extended previous findings that, compared with heterosexual controls, homosexual men have a later birth order, an earlier onset of puberty, and a lower body weight.
Sexual orientation and performance on sexually dimorphic motor tasks
TLDR
Heterosexual men outperformed heterosexual women, whereas gay men threw less accurately and lesbians tended to throw more accurately than their heterosexual counterparts, suggests that both sexual orientation and motor/cognitive predispositions may have early biological contributions.
The relation of birth order to sexual orientation in men and women.
TLDR
Results are consistent with the hypothesis that the high birth order of homosexual men reflects the progressive immunization of certain mothers to H-Y antigen by succeeding male fetuses, and the increasing effects of H- Y antibodies on sexual differentiation of the brain in succeeding male Fetuses.
