OBJECTIVE Apart from its claims for improvement of sexual functions in men, the puncturevine plant (Tribulus terrestris: TT) has long been considered as an energizer and vitalizer in the indigenous system of medicine. Sexual behavior and intracavernous pressure (ICP) measurements were taken in rats to scientifically validate the claim of TT [containing protodioscin (PTN)] as an aphrodisiac. MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty sexually mature male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into four…

Study of Furostenol Glycoside Fraction of Tribulus terresteris. on Male Sexual Function in Rats
TLDR
The furostenol glycoside fraction of Tribulus terrestris exhibited good aphrodisiac properties and was found to increase orientational activity parameters such as licking and ano-and genital grooming and decreased climbing and nongential grooming by male rats indicating increased sexual stimulation and lack of interest toward external environment after treatment with TT-FG.
Use of Tribulus terrestris and Lepidium meyenii extract in rats: reproductive, biochemical and body parameters
TLDR
It is concluded that the association of T. terrestris and L. meyenii has positive effects on serum testosterone, sperm concentration and epididymal morphology, with no evidence of effects in the testis, liver, spleen and kidneys.
Tribulus terrestris Protects against Male Reproductive Damage Induced by Cyclophosphamide in Mice
TLDR
The role of TT dry extract is highlighted to ameliorate the alterations induced by CP administration in mice testes, probably due to the presence of protodioscin.
Effect of aqueous extract of Bulbine natalensis (Baker) stem on the sexual behaviour of male rats.
TLDR
The results are indicative of prosexual stimulatory potentials of Bulbine natalensis in male rats and may be used in the management of disorders of desire/libido, premature ejaculation and erectile dysfunction in males.
Effects of Tribuls Terrestris (Quttub) and Clomiphene Citrate on Ovaries of Female Mice; Histological and Histochemical Study
TLDR
Tribuls terrestris can stimulate ovulation when given alone, and oppose the anti-ovulatory effect of clomiphene and resume ovulating when given in combination with it.
Alternative treatment of ovarian cysts with Tribulus terrestris extract: a rat model.
TLDR
It can be concluded that T. terrestris have a luteinizing effect on ovarian Cysts, which may relate to its gonadotropin-like activity; also, a high dose of the extract can efficiently remove ovarian cysts and resume ovarian activity.
The aphrodisiac herb Tribulus terrestris does not influence the androgen production in young men.
EFFECT OF TRIBULUS TERRESTRIS ON SERUM LUTEINIZING HORMONE IN SPRAGUE DAWLEY RATS
TLDR
Tribulus terrestris increases the levels of LH when administered in appropriate doses when applied to male Sprague Dawley rats.
Dose-dependent effects of Asparagus adscendens root (AARR) extract on the anabolic, reproductive, and sexual behavioral activity in rats
TLDR
The results indicate increased anabolic, reproductive, and sexual activities by AARR treatment, and provide scientific rationale for its traditional use as an aphrodisiac or for sexual disorders.

Proerectile pharmacological effects of Tribulus terrestris extract on the rabbit corpus cavernosum.
TLDR
The relaxant responses to acetylcholine, nitroglycerin and EFS and the lack of such effect on the contractile response to noradrenaline and histamine indicate that PTN has a proerectile activity, which may account for its claims as an aphrodisiac.
Protodioscin from herbal plant Tribulus terrestris L improves the male sexual functions, probably via DHEA
TLDR
A significant increase of DHEA-S levels in diabetic and non-di diabetic subjects after treatment, and a significant increase in the frequency of successful intercourse by 60% in both the diabetic andNon-diabetic groups with or without ED.

TLDR
In this article, the various pharmacological effects of TT have been reviewed and the studies based on TT extract in relation to male erectile dysfunction have been summarized.

TLDR
In reflex erection, erectile response to ES and penile NOS activity in the rat, T seems to be first converted to DHT, the more active androgen modality.

Rat model for the study of penile erection: pharmacologic and electrical-stimulation parameters.

A modified rat model is used for the study of the mechanisms of penile erection and phentolamine and norepinephrine increased systemic blood pressure, whereas phenylephrine decreased the intracavernous pressure in response to electrostimulation significantly.
