We measured serum leptin levels in two groupings of wild male baboons, one with access to abundant quantities of food from gardens and garbage dumps near human habitations (Garbage; n = 11) and one without access (No Garbage; n = 10). A Garbage subgroup had high leptin levels (Garbage HL), whereas the rest of the Garbage group had low leptin levels (Garbage LL) similar to those in the No Garbage group. The Garbage HL individuals were obese, with higher mass, body mass index, and leptin to mass…
Early appearance of the metabolic syndrome in socially reared bonnet macaques.
TLDR
S Socially reared and housed bonnet macaques may provide a useful model for studying the pathogenesis, prevention, and treatment of the metabolic syndrome.
Pleiotropic effects of genes for insulin resistance on adiposity in baboons.
TLDR
Results suggest that a set of genes contributing to insulin resistance also influence general and central adiposity phenotypes, and further genetic research in a larger sample size is needed to identify the common genes.
Serum leptin in the development of insulin resistance and other disorders in the metabolic syndrome.
TLDR
The aim of this study was to analyze the interrelations between several metabolic variables and factors related to insulin resistance in groups of both normal and non-diabetic hyperlipemic postmenopausal women and men of appropriate age, and to elucidate the gender differences.
Adiponectin but not resistin is associated with insulin resistance-related phenotypes in baboons.
TLDR
The findings suggest that resistin is not associated with insulin resistance, however, previous observations of relationships among weight, adiponectin, and insulin resistance are confirmed.
Physiological and Molecular Determinants of Insulin Action in the Baboon
TLDR
The obese baboon is a pertinent nonhuman primate model to examine the underlying cellular/molecular mechanisms responsible for insulin resistance and eventual development of type 2 diabetes.
Ecological and reproductive variance in serum leptin in wild vervet monkeys.
TLDR
Data show that in this wild primate population leptin is a sensitive index of natural variation in habitat and seasonally fluctuating reproductive state, and changes in leptin with gestation stage and duration of lactation suggest that transitory and reversible elevations were an important part of its ancestral role.
Eight week exposure to a high sugar high fat diet results in adiposity gain and alterations in metabolic biomarkers in baboons (Papio hamadryas sp.)
TLDR
The findings indicate that when exposed to a high sugar high fat diet, young adult male baboons develop increased body fat and triglyceride concentrations, altered adipokine concentrations, and evidence of altered glucose metabolism.
Body composition and cardiometabolic disease risk factors in captive baboons (Papio hamadryas sp.): sexual dimorphism.
TLDR
Despite stronger correlations between relative adiposity and insulin and triglyceride in males, the higher fasting insulin and lipid concentrations of female baboons may be underlain by their greater relative body fat masses.
Genetics of variation in adiponectin in pedigreed baboons: evidence for pleiotropic effects on adipocyte volume and serum adiponectin
TLDR
There is a significant genetic component affecting variation in the analyzed traits, and common genes may be influencing adiponectin expression, adipocyte volume, body weight and circulating triglycerides.

Serum leptin levels in wild and captive populations of baboons (papio): implications for the ancestral role of leptin.
TLDR
Serum leptin levels in wild, East African populations of baboons, and no differences occurred in leptin levels among the species, support the view that leptin evolved to be effective at low levels.
Effects of food availability on serum insulin and lipid concentrations in free‐ranging baboons
TLDR
The present results suggest potentially deleterious effects of a highly accessible, calorically dense food source, and associated reduction of physical activity for baboons living in an otherwise natural environment.
Body size and fatness of free‐living baboons reflect food availability and activity levels
TLDR
The difference in fatness between feeding conditions was similar to the difference between humans with frank obesity and those that are considered lean, but in both cases the percentages of body fat in the baboons were considerably less than those observed in humans.
Role of leptin in the neuroendocrine response to fasting
TLDR
It is proposed that regulation of the neuroendocrine system during starvation could be the main physiological role of leptin, and preventing the starvation-induced fall in leptin with exogenous leptin substantially blunts the changes in gonadal, adrenal and thyroid axes in male mice, and prevents the starve-induced delay in ovulation in female mice.
Cerebrospinal fluid leptin levels: Relationship to plasma levels and to adiposity in humans
TLDR
It is hypothesized that a saturable mechanism mediates CSF leptin transport, and that reduced efficiency of brain leptin delivery among obese individuals with high plasma leptin levels results in apparent leptin resistance.
Leptin accelerates the onset of puberty in normal female mice.
TLDR
It is proposed that leptin is the signal that informs the brain that energy stores are sufficient to support the high energy demands of reproduction, and may be a major determinant of the timing of puberty.
Strategies for the Delivery of Leptin to the CNS
TLDR
The peripheral pharmacokinetic and BBB transport characteristics of native leptin suggests strategies for improving the therapeutic profile of leptin, including the development of longer lasting and more permeable analogs, development of antagonists, enhancing the activity of the leptin transporter, and delivering leptin by intrathecal administration.
Recombinant leptin for weight loss in obese and lean adults: a randomized, controlled, dose-escalation trial.
TLDR
Administration of exogenous leptin appears to induce weight loss in some obese subjects with elevated endogenous serum leptin concentrations and a dose-response relationship with weight and fat loss was observed with subcutaneous recombinant leptin injections in both lean and obese subjects.
Body composition in baboons: Evaluating a morphometric method
TLDR
Results indicate that morphometric measures can accurately predict lean body mass in male and female baboons and combinations of these morphometric measurements explain between 70% and 100% of the variability and can be used to estimate lean and fat mass in baboons.
