OBJECTIVE Extracellular matrix modification by matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), tissue inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinases-1 (TIMP-1) and alpha2-macroglobulin may affect the stability of atherosclerotic plaques.
