Androstenediol (5-androsten-3 j3, 17~-diol, ADIOL) and androstenediol 3-sulfate (ADIOLS) are active metabolites of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and DHEA sulfate (DHEAS), respectively, and have estrogenic activity and immunoregulatory function. We examined serum concentrations of ADIOL, ADIOLS, DHEA, DHEAS and pregnenolone sulfate (5-pregnen-3j3-o1-20-one sulfate, PREGS) in patients with Graves' thyrotoxicosis (male/female 9/14), hypothyroidism (11/20) and in normal controls (14/29). The production, origin and role of dehydroepiandrosterone and delta 5-androstenediol as androgen prehormones in hirsute women.
TLDR
Blood production rates of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and Δ5-androstenediol (Δ5-diol) were measured in a group of 22 women with hirsutism, and was reflected by differences in plasma DHEA concentrations, when compared with normal women.
Serum dehydroepiandrosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate, and pregnenolone sulfate concentrations in patients with hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism.
TLDR
Thyroid hormone may stimulate the synthesis of these steroids, and DHEA sulfotransferase might be increased in hyperthyroidism, whereas serum DHEa-S and PREG-S concentrations were increased but D HEA was normal in hyper thyroidism.
Influence of l-Triiodothyronine on Steroid Hormone Metabolism: Studies in a Patient with Adrenal Hyperplasia (Cushing's Syndrome)
TLDR
The results suggest that thyroid hormone does increase steroid 5α-reductase activity as well as previously reported to occur in patients with adrenal hyperplasia (Cushing's type), and progressive increases in the following ratios of 5α/5β metabolites are suggested.
Androgen and oestrogen dynamics in hyperthyroidism.
TLDR
The dynamics of androgen and oestrogen metabolism and production in patients with hyperthyroidism were measured and changes could be explained by increased serum levels of sex hormone binding globulin which binds testosterone and DHT but not androstenedione.
Δ5-Androstenediol: Kinetics of Metabolism and Binding to Plasma Proteins in Normal Men and Women1
TLDR
Estrogen administration to two normal men increased the per cent binding of delta5-diol to plasma proteins and decreased the metabolic clearance rate towards the values found for normal women.
Metabolic clearance rate (MCR) of dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DS), its metabolism to dehydroepiandrosterone, androstenedione, testosterone, and dihydrotestosterone, and the effect of increased plasma DS concentration on DS MCR in normal women.
The combined infusion of [3H]dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate [( 3H]DS) and [14C]estrone (E1) for 6 h in four normal women in the follicular phase of the cycle demonstrated values of 13.77 +/- 0.27
Regulation of the immune response by dehydroepiandrosterone and its metabolites.
TLDR
In vitro data show that while DHEA, AED and AET each function in a similar manner in vivo, in vitro their effects are dramatically different from one another with only AET potentiating the cellular response by increasing lymphocyte activation and counteracting the immunosuppressive activity of hydrocortisone.
Alterations in circulating estradiol-17 in male patients with Graves's disease.
TLDR
Serum E2 fell gradually and consistently during effective treatment of hyperthyroidism with propylthiouracil, and neither the occurrence of gynecomastia nor the serum concentration of E2 correlated with serum concentrations of long acting thyro...
Heterologous enzyme immunoassay for serum androstenediol.
Dehydroepiandrosterone: kinetics of metabolism in normal men and women.
TLDR
Calculations indicate that DHEA is a major precursor of circulating delta 5-diol, and its peripheral conversion to several other C19-steroids including C20-steroid sulfates were significant for women than men and the lack of sex difference in the MCRs is reflected.
