Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease of worldwide distribution caused by spirochetes of the genus Leptospira. Leptospirosis clinical presentation ranges from subclinical infections to severe multiorgan-dysfunction syndromes. There are similarities between clinical and pathophysiological features encountered in leptospirosis and those of severe sepsis due to gram negative bacteria.
