Until recently, two major forms of colorectal epithelial polyp were recognized: the adenoma and the hyperplastic polyp. Adenomas were perceived to represent the precursor to colorectal cancer, whereas hyperplastic polyps were viewed as innocuous lesions with no potential for progression to malignancy.
