Group A streptococci (GAS) are the most frequent cause of pharyngitis in children and are a common cause of emergency room or paediatric clinic visits worldwide. This study determined the representative M and T types of GAS, and their distribution, among schoolchildren in the United Arab Emirates. Throat swabs were taken and cultured for GAS isolates during the winter of 1994-95 from 1000 children aged 5-7 years attending nine schools.
