Neonatal Group B Streptococcus (GBS) infection can be life threatening. Recognizing this as an important preventable disease, the CDC issued specific guidelines in 1996. Compelling evidence for a strong protective effect of the screening-based strategy relative to the risk-based strategy led to new recommendations in 2002 for universal screening by vaginal-rectal culture.
