In 2006 the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an alert, based on 27 case reports gathered over a 5-year span, regarding serotonin syndrome resulting from concurrent use of either a selective serotonin-re uptake inhibitor (SSRI) or a selective serotonin/norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) with a triptan. These diagnoses have been subsequently challenged as not meeting validated criteria for serotonin syndrome, in part because the FDA has yet to publicly disseminate important case…
Do triptan antimigraine medications interact with SSRI/SNRI antidepressants? What does your decision support system say?

TLDR
The case of the interaction between triptan antimigraine medications and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor/selective serotonin-norepinephrine reptake inhibitor (SSRI/SNRI) antidepressants provides an example of how the presentation of drug risk may unduly influence the utilization of drug therapy.
Triptans, serotonin agonists, and serotonin syndrome (serotonin toxicity): a review.
TLDR
There is neither significant clinical evidence, nor theoretical reason, to entertain speculation about serious SS from triptans and SSRIs, and the experimental foundation underpinning the latest understanding of SS is reviewed.
Drug interaction between a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor and a triptan leading to serotonin toxicity: a case report and review of the literature
TLDR
This patient’s presentation fulfilled both Sternbach and Hunter criteria for serotonin toxicity, illustrating a potential case of serotonin toxicity as a result of drug interaction between a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor and a triptan.
A review of SSRIs and SNRIs in neuropathic pain
TLDR
SSRIs and SNRIs may be considered in the treatment of neuropathic pain if treatment with tricyclic antidepressants and anticonvulsants fails, or if there are contraindications to these drugs.
Clinically Significant Interactions with Antidepressants
TLDR
Although cytochrome P-450-mediated drug interactions still constitute the majority of the reported literature data, more recent studies have focused on these drug transporters in mediating drug interactions, including the antidepressants.
Zolmitriptan and the Triptan Era
TLDR
This commentary reviews the use of zolmitriptan and other triptans, discusses how to maximize their effect, and examines the controversies surrounding this class of medication such as medication-overuse headache, use in migraine aura or prodrome, pediatric use, and important drug interactions.
Sumatriptan–naproxen fixed combination for acute treatment of migraine: a critical appraisal
TLDR
Sumatriptan–naproxen fixed combination tablets proves to be an effective and well tolerated drug that combines these two mechanisms; yet is far from being the ultimate in migraine abortive therapy, and further research remains essential.
Pharmacological Acute Migraine Treatment Strategies : Choosing the Right Drug for a Specific Patient
simple for many patients with migraine, particularly those with attacks of mild or moderate severity. They may find, for example, that ibuprofen works well for them. Others may need to try a number
Targeted Review: Medications for Acute Migraine Treatment
TLDR
A targeted review of drugs used for acute treatment of episodic migraine in Canada formulated recommendations for the available acute medications for migraine treatment according to the GRADE method, which should be helpful for practitioners who prescribe medications for acute migraine treatment.

Sumatriptan Contraindications and the Serotonin Syndrome
TLDR
It is suggested that sumatriptan should continue to be avoided in patients taking these agents until further data demonstrating safety become available, and the balance of documented clinical experience suggests that most patients tolerate this combination without incident.
Serotonin Toxicity
TLDR
To avoid coprescription as suggested by Sclar et al based upon 7 cases worldwide (out of perhaps a few million exposures) is premature and may be harmful to the authors' patients when efficacious medications are not used.
The Serotonin Syndrome, Triptans, and the Potential for Drug–Drug Interactions
TLDR
It is currently unclear whether administration of triptans with other serotonergic medications increases the risk of serotonin syndrome, according to a review of published data.
Serotonin syndrome associated with triptan monotherapy.
TLDR
This work investigated whether triptan monotherapy is associated with the serotonin syndrome by searching for such cases in the Food and Drug Administration's database of suspected serotonin syndrome cases.

TLDR
There is now sufficient pharmacological data on some drugs to enable a prediction of which ones will be at risk of precipitating ST, either by themselves or in combinations with other drugs, which indicates that some antidepressant drugs, presently thought to have serotonergic effects in animals, do not exhibit such effects in humans.

TLDR
Improved awareness of the serotonin syndrome is needed within general practice, and there is a need to distinguish the relatively minor serotonergic symptoms from those of a severe, life-threatening serotonin syndrome.

TLDR
The serotonin syndrome is a toxic condition requiring heightened clinical awareness for prevention, recognition, and prompt treatment, and further work is needed to establish the diagnostic criteria, incidence, and predisposing factors.

TLDR
Knowledge of the properties of these drugs will help to ensure that problems can be avoided in most clinical situations, and treated appropriately (with 5-HT(2A) antagonists for severe cases) if they occur.
Serotonin Syndrome and Rhabdomyolysis Induced by Concomitant Use of Triptans, Fluoxetine and Hypericum
TLDR
A patient who developed seizures as the presenting symptom of serotonin syndrome followed by acute rhabdomyolysis was reported on, precipitated by triptans use in a patient with long-lasting use of fluoxetine and hypericum.
The Hunter Serotonin Toxicity Criteria: simple and accurate diagnostic decision rules for serotonin toxicity.
TLDR
Decision rules (the Hunter Serotonin Toxicity Criteria) were developed that were simpler, more sensitive to serotonin toxicity and less likely to yield false positives.
