Background: Viruses of the Herpes viridae family infect 90% of the Earth’s population. Humans are the hosts of at least nine unique herpes viruses. Aim: This study is aimed at evaluating the seroprevalence of type specific herpes simplex virus infection and the associated risk factors in a cross-section of asymptomatic healthy women of childbearing age in Kogi state, Nigeria. Methodology: A total of 330 females of child bearing age (15 - 49 years) participated in this study. They were recruited…

Seroprevalence of Herpes Simplex Virus Type-1 and 2 among Pregnant Women Attending Antenatal Care at Mile Four Hospital, Nigeria
Prevalence of HSV-1 and 2 were significantly associated with age, occupation, trimester, gravidity and parity, thus there is need for frequent educating the pregnant women about the danger ofHSV.
Seroprevalence of herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 in Nigeria: a systematic review and meta-analyses
The study was limited by the paucity of quality studies, variations in diagnostic methods and high heterogeneity in seroprevalence estimates, so large and representative national epidemiological surveys covering all regions and specific groups are recommended.

Frequency of herpes simplex virus in Syria based on type-specific serological assay.
Herpes simplex virus type 2 seroprevalence was highest among prostitutes and bar girls and lowest in healthy persons and intermediate in sexually transmitted disease patients, cervical cancer patients and AIDS patients.
Seroprevalence of IgG antibodies to herpes simplex virus type-1 in Nigerian children.
Over half of the children sampled were protected from HSV-1 infection while 42.2% were susceptible to the infection and were at risk of developing severe HSv-1 manifestation which includes keratitis, encephalitis and Keratoconjunctivitis.

Prevalence and Risk Factors for Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2 Infection Among Middle-Age Women in Brazil and the Philippines
The higher HSV-2 seroprevalence in Brazil than in the Philippines may be explained largely by differences in the sexual behavior of women and their husbands.
Prevalence of infection with herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 in Australia: a nationwide population based survey
HSV-2 infection is less common in Australia than the United States, and this will allow planning for combating HIV transmission in high prevalence populations in northern Australia, and the high HSV-1 seroprevalence will be important for future deployment of genital herpes vaccines.
Antenatal Seroprevalence of Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2 (HSV-2) in Canadian Women: HSV-2 Prevalence Increases Throughout the Reproductive Years
TheHSV-2 seroprevalence among pregnant women in British Columbia is similar to that in the United States and other countries, which may relate to continued transmission, an age cohort effect, orboth.
Seroepidemiologic study of herpes simplex virus type 2 and cytomegalovirus among young adults in northern Jordan.
The high percentage of seropositivity in males is most probably due to the crowded living and low socioeconomic status of the Jordan population, and the way of life in the Middle East that gives males the freedom to play outdoors more than females.
Age-specific prevalence of infection with herpes simplex virus types 2 and 1: a global review.
Information on age- and sex-specific prevalence of herpes simplex virus (HSV) types 2 and 1 infections is essential to optimize genital herpes control strategies, which increase in importance because
Sexual and demographic risk factors for herpes simplex type 1 and 2 in women attending an antenatal clinic
The possible availability of an HSV-2 vaccine that is able to protect over 70% of women offers the best hope for control of genital herpes.
