}The two main subgroups of the family of human T-lymphotropic retroviruses (HTLV) that have previously been characterized are known as HTLV-I and HTLV-II. Both are associated with certain human leukemias and lymphomas. Cell surface antigens (p61 and p65) encoded by HTLV-I are frequently recognized, at low titers, by antibodies in the serum of patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) or with signs or symptoms that precede AIDS (pre-AIDS). This suggests an involvement of HTLV in…

Antibodies reactive with human T-lymphotropic retroviruses (HTLV-III) in the serum of patients with AIDS.
- Biology, MedicineScience

Serum samples from 88 percent of patients with AIDS and from 79 percent of homosexual men with signs and symptoms that frequently precede AIDS, but from less than 1 percent of heterosexual subjects, have antibodies reactive against antigens of HTLV-III, and the major immune reactivity appears to be directed against p41, the presumed envelope antigen of the virus.
An HTLV-III peptide produced by recombinant DNA is immunoreactive with sera from patients with AIDS
- Biology, MedicineNature

The production, by genetic engineering methods, of a peptide of relative molecular mass 15,000 which was strongly immunoreactive with anti-HTLV-III antibodies present in sera from AIDS patients is suggested, suggesting that the peptide may be useful for detecting anti- HTLV- III antibodies in blood samples.

Serologic identification and characterization of a macaque T-lymphotropic retrovirus closely related to HTLV-III.

The serologic characterization of a new simian retrovirus that is related to HTLV-III is described, which naturally infects a nonhuman primate species and may provide a useful model for the study of HT LV-III and the pathogenesis of AIDS.
Serological characterization of HTLV-III infection in AIDS and related disorders.

There was no apparent difference in pattern of antibodies to HTLV-III-related antigens in symptomatic vs. asymptomatic seropositive individuals and a short incubation time in the immunoblot assay failed to detect low-titer or low-affinity antibodies that were detected by overnight incubation.
Neutralization of human T-lymphotropic virus type III by sera of AIDS and AIDS-risk patients
- Medicine, BiologyNature

It is reported here that sera from subjects in various disease categories possess only low-level neutralizing activity, even when antibodies to viral membrane antigens are present in high titre.
A pathogenic retrovirus (HTLV-III) linked to AIDS.
- Biology, MedicineThe New England journal of medicine

There are new possibilities for identifying early cases of AIDS through antibody testing, and the discovery of an immunosuppressive retrovirus in AIDS could serve as a stimulus to re-examine endemic forms of cancer in Third World countries.
Antibodies to HTLV-III in Swiss patients with AIDS and pre-AIDS and in groups at risk for AIDS.
- Medicine, BiologyThe New England journal of medicine
- 1985
Antibodies to the major viral protein p24 were found consistently and at high titers in the seropositive members of the groups at risk and in those with pre-AIDS but were dramatically reduced in patients with AIDS, while the ELISA test that is currently available is a useful screening tool.
Molecular cloning and characterization of the HTLV-III virus associated with AIDS
- Biology, MedicineNature
- 1984
The availability of the cloned HTLV-III genome will now allow an unambiguous comparison of this virus with other retroviruses that also have been associated with the pathogenesis of AIDS8–11, and will facilitate the development of diagnostic and therapeutic measures in the treatment of AIDS.
Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type III: immunologic characterization and primary structure analysis of the major internal protein, p24
- Biology, MedicineJournal of virology
- 1985
The major internal structural protein of human T-cell lymphotropic virus type III (HTLV-III), a virus etiologically implicated in acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), was purified to homogeneity and shown to lack immunologic cross-reacting antigenic determinants shared by other known retroviruses.

It is found that antibodies against p24 are present in human sera (including those of patient C.R. and his wife), and that these are specifically directed at HTLVCR proteins and not at cell-specific determinants—the first evidence for a specific immune response in humans against a retrovirus.
