A prospective study was performed to determine the serologic response of previously vaccinated horses to revaccination against eastern and western equine encephalomyelitis (EEE and WEE). Horses responded variably to each antigen, and some horses had low or undetectable antibodies 6 months after vaccination. Some horses did not develop increasing titers to EEE or WEE despite recent vaccination. Geometric mean titers peaked 2 weeks after revaccination and were significantly increased from before…

Immunologic responses to West Nile virus in vaccinated and clinically affected horses.
- MedicineJournal of the American Veterinary Medical Association
- 2005
A portion of horses vaccinated against WNV may respond poorly and vaccination every 6 months may be indicated in certain horses and in areas of high vector activity, and other preventative methods such as mosquito control are warranted.
Humoral response to an equine encephalitis vaccine in healthy alpacas.
- Biology, MedicineJournal of the American Veterinary Medical Association

Results suggested that inoculation of alpacas with 3 doses of a bivalent, killed-virus equine encephalitis vaccine induced a humoral antibody response against EEE virus.
Equids’ Core Vaccines Guidelines in North America: Considerations and Prospective
- Medicine, BiologyVaccines
- 2022
The aims of this review are to present how the vaccine guidelines have been established for small companion animals and horses in North America, to review theEquine literature to solidify or contrast the current AAEP guidelines of core vaccines, and to suggest future research directions in the equine vaccine field considering small companion animal strategies and the current available resources in equine literature.

These findings represent strong evidence that MAYV and all equine encephalitis alphaviruses circulated in the Pantanal and could not be linked to the neurological disorder outbreak reported recently.

In endemic areas, EEE should be considered a differential diagnosis for young and adult camelids with CNS disease and foundings included polioencephalitis with lymphocytic perivascular cuffing; neutrophil infiltration; gliosis; neuron satellitosis; necrosis; and edema.

It is suggested that both vaccine candidates are less competent than the parental strains to be transmitted by the primary mosquito vector, Cx.
Test of Recrudescence Hypothesis for Overwintering of Eastern Equine Encephalomyelitis Virus in Gray Catbirds
- BiologyJournal of medical entomology
- 2011
This study tested the recrudescence hypothesis with gray catbirds captured in northern Ohio and found no EEEV viral RNA was detected in the blood, kidney, spleen, brain, liver, and lower intestine upon necropsy at 19 wk postinfection.

Sera from horses and human beings with clinically diagnosed western equine encephalitis (WEE) virus infections were tested for hemagglutination-inhibition (HI), complement-fixation (CF), and neutralizing antibody to WEE virus, suggesting the presence of a high HI, CF, and/or N antibody titer can be used as presumptive evidence for infection with this virus.
