Calcite, a widespread natural mineral at the Earth's surface, is well-known for its capacity to sequester various elements within its structure. Among these elements, selenium is important because of its high toxicity in natural systems and for human health. In the form of selenite (Se((IV))), selenium can be incorporated into calcite during growth. Our in situ atomic force microscopy observations of calcite surfaces during contact with selenium-bearing solutions demonstrate that another…

Sequestration of Antimony on Calcite Observed by Time-Resolved Nanoscale Imaging.
TLDR
This coupled dissolution-precipitation process that occurs in a boundary layer at the calcite surface can sequester Sb as a solid phase on calcite, which has environmental implications as it may reduce the mobility of this hazardous compound in soils and groundwaters.
Substitutional Disorder of SeO32-/IO3- in the Crystalline Solid Matrix: Insights into the Fate of Radionuclides 79Se and 129I in the Environment.
TLDR
A crystalline solid Th(IO3)2(SeO3) representing the first example of aliovalent substitution between IO3- and SeO32- sharing the same structural site is reported, as demonstrated by single crystal X-ray diffraction, laser-ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry analysis, and spectroscopic techniques including infrared, Raman, andX-ray absorption spectroscopies.
Metal Sequestration through Coupled Dissolution–Precipitation at the Brucite–Water Interface
The increasing release of potentially toxic metals from industrial processes can lead to highly elevated concentrations of these metals in soil, and ground- and surface-waters. Today, metal pollution
Enhancing the effect of bisulfite on sequestration of selenite by zerovalent iron
The enhancing effect of bisulfite (HSO3−) on the kinetics of Se(IV) sequestration by zerovalent iron (ZVI) was systematically investigated as a function of headspace volume, HSO3− concentration and

In situ nanoscale observations of the dissolution of dolomite cleavage surfaces
Knowledge of the kinetics and mechanisms of carbonate dissolution is essential, for instance, to determine the contribution of carbonate-fluid reactions to the global carbon cycle and CO2
Direct nanoscale observations of CO2 sequestration during brucite [Mg(OH)2] dissolution.
TLDR
Nucleation predominantly occurred in areas of high dissolution such as deep step edges suggesting that the carbonation reaction is locally diffusion-transport controlled and has implications for carbonation reactions in general.
