The analyses of numerous prokaryotic and eukaryotic genomes have revealed the presence of variable number tandem repeats (VNTRs). VNTR analysis is currently widely used to sub-speciate many bacterial, fungal, and viral pathogens and has facilitated a number of molecular epidemiology studies.
