Centromeres are the site for kinetochore formation and spindle attachment and are embedded in heterochromatin in most eukaryotes. The repeat-rich nature of heterochromatin has hindered obtaining a detailed understanding of the composition and organization of heterochromatic and centromeric DNA sequences.
