Abstract Histone synthesis in cycling tissue-culture cells can be separated into basal synthesis and S-phase synthesis. S-phase histone synthesis comprises about 90% of total histone synthesis, and in this regard our results support the generally held model that most histone synthesis is tightly linked to DNA synthesis. Basal histone synthesis is less than 10% of the S-phase synthesis but persists throughout the S, G2 and G1 phases of the cell cycle, while S-phase synthesis rises in parallel… Expand
Histone synthesis and deposition in the G1 and S phases of hepatoma tissue culture cells.
TLDR
A model which includes a measure of histone exchange on the chromatin fiber is proposed and emphasizes the dynamics of hist one-histone and histone-DNA interactions in regions of active genes and at replication forks. Expand
Changes in histone H3 composition and synthesis pattern during lymphocyte activation.
TLDR
The chromatin of activated lymphocytes has a different histone H3 variant composition than resting or quiescent lymphocytes, and it is suggested that the proportion of H3.3 in the mass pattern of the Chromatin of a cell may be related solely to how long that cell has been quiescence. Expand
Histone and DNA synthesis in differentiating and rapidly proliferating cells in vivo and in vitro.
TLDR
Results provide further support for the model that a high degree of coupling of histone and DNA synthesis may occur only in proliferating, non-differentiating cell types and that both types of regulation can be observed both in in vivo and in vitro systems. Expand
Regulation of human histone gene expression during the HeLa cell cycle requires protein synthesis
We have examined the effects of protein synthesis inhibition on histone gene expression during the HeLa cell cycle. Histone mRNAs, which normally are rapidly degraded in the absence of DNA synthesis,Expand
H1 variant synthesis in proliferating and quiescent human cells.
TLDR
The results suggest that the pattern of H1 synthesis is the same for cells in non-S phases of the cell cycle and in quiescent cells, and the relationship of the variant synthesis pattern to the growth state and DNA replication is similar to that of the core histone H3 but not that of H2A. Expand
Histone synthesis by lymphocytes in G0 and G1.
TLDR
G0 and G1 histone synthesis was completely resistant to treatment with hydroxyurea and accounted for at least 6% of nuclear protein radioactivity, and the rate of synthesis is about 2-3% of that of S phase lymphocytes. Expand
Kinetics of accumulation and depletion of soluble newly synthesized histone in the reciprocal regulation of histone and DNA synthesis.
TLDR
The results support a unified model of reciprocal regulatory mechanisms between histone and DNA synthesis in the assembly of chromatin. Expand
Patterns of histone variant synthesis can distinguish go from G1 cells
TLDR
It is suggested that the quiescent state is not part of G1, but that it is a separate and discrete state. Expand
Cell cycle regulation of mouse H3 histone mRNA metabolism
The mechanisms responsible for the periodic accumulation and decay of histone mRNA in the mammalian cell cycle were investigated in mouse erythroleukemia cells, using a cloned mouse H3 histone geneExpand
Histone variant synthesis patterns in confluent populations of human diploid cells of different in vitro ages.
TLDR
Results indicate that confluent populations of older HDF are either in a different state of the cell cycle than younger cells or that they are synthesizing a different set of histone components while being maintained in the same cell cycle state at confluence. Expand

Synthesis of H1 histones by BHK cells in G1
TLDR
The synthesis of histones and DNA was examined in BHK cells arrested in G1 by isoleucine starvation and in cells progressing into the S phase upon isoleUCine refeeding, finding that H1 histones were synthesized in the same molar ratio in which they are present in chromatin. Expand
DNA and histone synthesis in mouse cells which exhibit temperature-sensitive DNA synthesis
TLDR
It is suggested that the terminal phenotype of coupled temperature inactivation of DNA and histone synthesis may be diagnostic of cells ts in an S-phase function and may therefore be a useful secondary screen in designation of cell cycle mutants. Expand
G1 and S phase mammalian cells synthesize histones at equivalent rates
TLDR
It seems likely that differential alterations in the rate of histone synthesis do not occur to a significant degree as cells proceed through the cycle, but the association of newly synthesized histones with DNA takes place after the onset of DNA replication. Expand
Histone synthesis in early amphibian development: histone and DNA syntheses are not co-ordinated.
TLDR
It was concluded that histone synthesis was not co-ordinated with DNA synthesis either temporally or quantitatively and it is suggested that in order to provide enough histones for the late blastula embryo a store of histone is accumulated during the early cleavage stages and possibly during oogenesis. Expand
Synthesis of histone messenger RNA of HeLa cells during the cell cycle
TLDR
The absence of coupling between histone mRNA synthesis and DNA duplication shows that the regulatory process which determines the presence or absence of histone RNA in the cytoplasm of HeLa cells is not at the transcriptional level. Expand
Processing of newly synthesized histone molecules
TLDR
The structural function of histones is to organize the long, fibrillar molecules of DNA into a more compact form, achieved, in part, by electrostatic interactions between the positively charged basic amino acids in the histone polypeptide chains and the negatively charged phosphate groups of DNA. Expand
Regulation of histone gene expression in HeLa S3 cells.
Changes in the rate of histone synthesis during oocyte maturation and very early development of Xenopus laevis.
TLDR
Oocytes make histones much more slowly than do unfertilized eggs and embryos, although, in eggs, the overall rate of protein synthesis is only a little faster, and the acceleration of histone synthesis is brought about by a post-transcriptional control mechanism capable of changing the relative amounts of different proteins made by the cell. Expand
Non-allelic variants of histones 2a, 2b and 3 in mammals
TLDR
The primary structure of the variants of mammalian histones 2a, 2b and 3, which exhibit tissue-specific variation by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in presence of non-ionic detergents is reported. Expand
Quantitative determination of histone modification. H2A acetylation and phosphorylation.
TLDR
H2A variant H2A.Z, b3.1, seems to be involved at the first level of modification, by analyzing tryptic peptides from these proteins on 50% acrylamide peptide gels. Expand
