We establish a new formalism to describe the interaction of an optical system with a background of gravitational waves based on optical medium analogy. Besides reproducing the basic formula for the response of a LISA-type interferometer in terms of the phase shift of light, other classical observables of the electromagnetic field such as light-bending, walk-off angle and Stokes parameters are investigated. At the quantum level, this approach enables us to construct a full quantum Hamiltonian…

Quantum interactions between a laser interferometer and gravitational waves
LIGO’s detection of gravitational waves marks a first step in measurable effects of general relativity on quantum matter. In their current operation, laser interferometer gravitational-wave detectors
Quantum Mechanics of Gravitational Waves.
The gravitational field is treated as a quantum field and it is found that falling bodies in gravity are subject to random fluctuations ("noise") whose characteristics depend on the quantum state of the gravitational field.
Discovering Relic Gravitational Waves in Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation
The authority of J.A. Wheeler in many areas of gravitational physics is immense, and there is a connection with the study of relic gravitational waves as well. I begin with a brief description of
Cosmological backgrounds of gravitational waves
Gravitational wave observations have a great potential for probing cosmology. Here we concentrate on the early universe, and review proposed sources that can lead to cosmological backgrounds of
On the observational determination of squeezing in relic gravitational waves and primordial density perturbations
We develop a theory in which relic gravitational waves and primordial density perturbations are generated by strong variable gravitational field of the early Universe. The generating mechanism is the
Electromagnetic Waves in Gravitational Fields
The scattering of plane electromagnetic waves by the gravitational field of an isolated physical system is studied. On the level of the geometrical optics approximation the general theory of light
Gravitational wave array -- operation of the LIGO-Virgo network as a gravitational wave Hanbury Brown and Twiss interferometer
The current gravitational wave observatory network includes detectors at Hanford, Livingston, and Cascina. This network could be used as a gravitational wave Hanbury Brown and Twiss (HBT)
Refraction index analysis of light propagation in a colliding gravitational wave spacetime
The optical medium analogy of a given spacetime was developed decades ago and has since then been widely applied to different gravitational contexts. Here we consider the case of a colliding
Relic gravitational waves and cosmology
The paper begins with a brief recollection of interactions of the author with Ya B Zeldovich in the context of the study of relic gravitational waves. The principles and early results on the
Prospects for direct detection of primordial gravitational waves
We study the primordial gravitational wave background produced in models of single-field inflation. Using the inflationary flow approach, we investigate the amplitude of gravitational wave spectrum,
