According to the Belinski-Khalatnikov-Lifshitz conjecture, close to a spacelike singularity different spatial points decouple, and the dynamics can be described in terms of the Mixmaster (vacuum Bianchi IX) model. In order to understand the role played by quantum-gravity effects in this context, in the present work we consider the semiclassical behavior of this model. Classically, this system undergoes a series of transitions between Kasner epochs, which are described by a specific transition law…

WKB Approaches to Restore Time in Quantum Cosmology: Predictions and Shortcomings

In this review, we analyse different aspects concerning the possibility to separate a gravity-matter system into a part which lives close to a quasi-classical state and a “small” quantum subset. The

Quantum dynamics corresponding to chaotic BKL scenario

We quantize the solution to the Belinski-Khalatnikov-Lifshitz (BKL) scenario using the integral quantization method. Quantization smears the gravitational singularity avoiding its localization in the

Quantum fluctuations and semiclassicality in an inflaton-driven evolution

A semiclassical description of quantum systems is applied to probe the dynamics of the cosmological model of an inflationary universe with quadratic inflaton potential, described in a quantum

A quantum gravity extension to the Mixmaster dynamics

In the loop quantum cosmology effective dynamics for the vacuum Bianchi type I and type IX space-times, a non-singular bounce replaces the classical singularity. The bounce can be approximated as an

Singularity avoidance in a quantum model of the Mixmaster universe

We present a quantum model of the vacuum Bianchi-IX dynamics. It is based on four main elements. First, we use a compound quantization procedure: an affine coherent state quantization for isotropic

Polymer representation of the Bianchi IX cosmology in the Misner variables

We analyze the Bianchi IX Universe in the Polymer Quantum Mechanics framework by facing both semiclassical and purely quantum effects near the cosmological singularity. We adopt Misner variables to

Loop quantum cosmology of Bianchi type IX models

The ''improved dynamics'' of loop quantum cosmology is extended to include anisotropies of the Bianchi type I model. As in the isotropic case, a massless scalar field serves as a relational time

Quantum geometrodynamics of the Bianchi IX cosmological model

The canonical quantum theory of gravity—quantum geometrodynamics (QG)—is applied to the homogeneous Bianchi type IX cosmological model. As a result, a framework for the quantum theory of homogeneous

Inhomogeneous quantum Mixmaster: from classical towards quantum mechanics

Starting from the Hamiltonian formulation for the inhomogeneous Mixmaster dynamics, we approach its quantum features through the link of the quasi-classical limit. We fix the proper operator-ordering

Hamiltonian formulation of the Belinskii-Khalatnikov-Lifshitz conjecture

The Belinskii, Khalatnikov, and Lifshitz conjecture [V. A. Belinskii, I. M. Khalatnikov, and E. M. Lifshitz, Adv. Phys. 19, 525 (1970)] posits that on approach to a spacelike singularity in general

Effective dynamics in Bianchi type II loop quantum cosmology

We numerically investigate the solutions to the effective equations of the Bianchi II model within the ``improved'' loop quantum cosmology dynamics. The matter source is a massless scalar field. We

Minisuperspace models of discrete systems

A discrete quantum spin system is presented in which several modern methods of canonical quantum gravity can be tested with promising results. In particular, features of interacting dynamics are

The Bianchi IX model in Loop Quantum Cosmology

The Bianchi IX model has been used often to investigate the structure close to singularities of general relativity. Its classical chaos is expected to have, via the BKL scenario, implications even
