The inner crust of a neutron star is a superfluid and inhomogeneous system, consisting of a lattice of nuclei immersed in a sea of neutrons. We perform a quantum calculation of the associated pairing gap and compare it to the results one obtains in the Local Density Approximation (LDA). It is found that the LDA overestimates the spatial dependence of the gap, and leads to a specific heat of the system which is too large at low temperatures, as compared with the quantal result. This is caused by…
Nuclear Impurities in the Superfluid Crust of Neutron Stars: Quantum Calculation and Observable Effects on the Cooling
We perform a quantum mechanical calculation of the neutron-specific heat in the Wigner-Seitz cells that characterize the inner crust of a neutron star, where a Coulomb lattice of neutron-rich nuclei
Nuclear superfluidity and specific heat in the inner crust of neutron stars
We analyze the temperature dependence of pairing correlations in the inner crust matter of neutron stars. The study is done in a finite-temperature HFB approach and by using a zero range pairing
Superfluid properties of the inner crust of neutron stars
Superfluid properties of the inner crust matter of neutron stars, formed by nuclear clusters immersed in a dilute neutron gas, are analyzed in a self-consistent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approach. The
Unified description of neutron superfluidity in the neutron-star crust with analogy to anisotropic multi-band BCS superconductors
The neutron superfluidity in the inner crust of a neutron star has been traditionally studied considering either homogeneous neutron matter or only a small number of nucleons confined inside the
Proximity effect of pair correlation in the inner crust of neutron stars
We study proximity effect of pair correlation in the inner crust of neutron stars by means of the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory formulated in the coordinate space. We describe a system
Superfluid properties of the inner crust of neutron stars. II. Wigner-Seitz cells at finite temperature
We investigate the superfluid properties of the inner crust of neutron stars at finite temperature for different pairing functionals. We generalize the formalism adopted in previous article to
Nuclear superfluidity and cooling time of neutron stars
Abstract. We discuss how the nuclear superfluidity affects the thermalisation time of the inner crust of neutron star in the case of a rapid cooling process. The thermal response of the inner crust
Mean field and pairing properties in the crust of neutron stars
Properties of the matter in the inner crust of a neutron star are investigated in a Hartree-Fock plus BCS approximation employing schematic effective forces of the type of the Skyrme forces. Special
Thermalization time of hot neutron star crust
We discuss the thermalization process of the neutron stars crust described by solving the heat transport equation with a microscopic input for the specific heat of baryonic matter. The heat equation
