Semantic representation of disorders in Version 3 of the Read Codes

Abstract

Version 3 of the Read codes (Read Thesaurus) was developed by expanding the earlier versions of the Read Codes with clinical concepts and associated terms that were collected during the Terms Projects [1]. The thesaurus was created and is maintained by a network of 50 representative Specialty Working Groups (SWGs) and thus represents a unique resource of disorder taxonomy derived from a wide base of clinical knowledge and experience. The advent of Version 3 heralded not only an expansion in the detail available but a new file structure [2], where concepts are represented as a subclass hierarchy in a directed acyclic graph, and explicit relationships between concepts are also expressed in a template file [3].
