This paper examines the role that selflessness and perfectionism may play as possible predictors of pathological eating attitudes and eating disorders (ED). 1057 schoolgirls (seventh to ninth grade) participated in the initial screening phase. They were administered the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26), Selflessness Scale (SS) and Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale (MPS). Based on their EAT-26 scores, 150 girls were invited to a clinical interview 2 years later (second phase). In the third…

Selflessness as a predictor of remission from an eating disorder: 1–4 year outcomes from an adolescent day-care unit
TLDR
It is found that psychological features are not the main target of the important search for predictors of remission from ED, and the findings of the present study add the psychological feature of selflessness to this search.
Anorexia Nervosa, Selflessness, and Gender-role Identity: A Study of Daughters and Parents.
TLDR
The findings suggest the need to integrate the self-psychological approach, which emphasizes the anorexic's tendency to ignore her own interests in favor of others' needs, with feminist views that stress the role society plays in putting pressure on women to become alienated from themselves.
The relationship between perfectionism and eating-related symptoms in adolescents: A systematic review.
TLDR
Most studies supported the relationship between perfectionism and EDs, with the majority adopting a unidimensional approach for assessing perfectionism; among studies that employed multidimensional measures of perfectionism, the majority supported the relationships between eating symptoms and PC, while fewer studies provided significant unique associations with PS.
Lifetime Obesity in Patients with Eating Disorders: Increasing Prevalence, Clinical and Personality Correlates
TLDR
Over the last 10 years, the prevalence of obesity associated with disorders characterized by the presence of binge episodes, namely bulimic disorders, is increasing, and this is linked with greater clinical severity and a poorer prognosis.
The self and eating disorders.
TLDR
A variety of self-related constructs that have been theoretically and empirically linked to the development and course of eating disorders are examined, including constructs related to self-esteem and self-efficacy.
Mentalizing Self and Other and Affect Regulation Patterns in Anorexia and Depression
TLDR
Findings suggest that deficiencies in mentalization and affect regulation are not unique to AN, but may rather associated with psychopathology in general, and alexithymia and depression may increase ED-related symptomatology.
"Eating Me Up from Inside": A Pilot Study of Mentalization of Self and Others and Emotion Regulation Strategies among Young Women with Eating Disorders.
TLDR
High mentalization may serve as a coping mechanism to attenuate eating disorder symptoms, and was correlated with attenuated ED symptoms.
What Components of Perfectionism Predict Drive for Thinness?
TLDR
Structural equation modelling indicated a unidirectional relationship between evaluative concerns and drive for thinness, with evaluatives concerns, measured at Time 1 predicting an increase in drive for thinnerness at Time 2.
Between Selflessness and Differentiation in Postnatal Adjustment: Exploration of a Combined Model
The notion that postnatal adjustment requires women’s selflessness is widely accepted but understudied. This study explored the utility of a combined (selflessness × differentiation of self) model in

Risk factors for eating disorders in adolescents. A Spanish community-based longitudinal study.
TLDR
Controlling the effect of previous eating psychopathology, pathological body dissatisfaction, measured with the Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ), and a negative perception of parental attitudes were predictors of eating disorders 2 years later.
A prospective study of self-esteem in the prediction of eating problems in adolescent schoolgirls: questionnaire findings.
TLDR
Girls with low self-esteem at age 11-12 were at significantly greater risk of developing the more severe signs of eating disorders, as well as other psychological problems, by the age of 15-16, and it is argued that more research is needed to replicate and extend these findings.
The Eating Attitudes Test: Validation With DSM-IV Eating Disorder Criteria
TLDR
Results show that the EAT has an accuracy rate of at least 90% when used to differentially diagnose those with and without eating disorders and that mean EAT scores differed among eating-disordered, symptomatic, and asymptomatic participants.
Body image and personality predictors of eating disorder symptoms during the college years.
TLDR
Dissatisfaction with one's figure seems to be consistently related to worsening eating pathology, and changes in Restraint and Bulimia were significantly related to Figure Dissatisfaction.
Risk factors for the onset of eating disorders in adolescent girls: results of the McKnight longitudinal risk factor study.
TLDR
Thin body preoccupation and social pressure are important risk factors for the development of eating disorders in adolescents and efforts to reduce peer, cultural, and other sources of thin bodyPreoccupation may be necessary to prevent eating disorders.
Rejection of life in anorexic and bulimic patients.
TLDR
The findings support differentiation of death preoccupation to several components and might direct clinicians to help patients reduce their "self-guilt," that is, guilt of promoting their own interests.

Neuroticism and low self-esteem as risk factors for incident eating disorders in a prospective cohort study.
TLDR
The results provide prospective evidence supporting the role of neuroticism and low self-esteem as major determinants of ED.
The Eating Attitudes Test: an index of the symptoms of anorexia nervosa.
TLDR
The EAT was validated using 2 groups of female anorexia nervosa patients and female control subjects and total EAT score was significantly correlated with criterion group membership, suggesting a high level of concurrent validity.
