Abstract We have made quantitative measurements on the characteristics of self-focusing varying from transient to quasi-steady-state. The results agree well with a simple unified physical description of self-focusing and with known theoretical predictions. Stimulated Brillouin scattering is identified as the mechanism responsible for the limiting diameter of the self-focused beam in our experiment.
