We used functional magnetic resonance imaging to assess whether self-construal priming can change adults' self-awareness induced during face perception. After reading essays containing independent or interdependent pronouns (e.g., I or we), participants were scanned while judging the head orientation of images showing their own and familiar faces. Neural activity in the right middle frontal cortex was greater when participants viewed their own rather than familiar faces, and this difference was…

Accessible cultural mind-set modulates default mode activity: Evidence for the culturally situated brain
TLDR
The findings suggest that accessible collectivistic/individualistic mind-set induced by self-construal priming is associated with modulations of both task-related and resting-state activity in the default mode network.
Self-construal priming modulates the scope of visual attention
TLDR
The results provide evidence for dynamics of the scope of visual attention as a function of self-construal priming that switches self-concept toward the interdependent or independent styles in Chinese.
Distinct effects of self-construal priming on empathic neural responses in Chinese and Westerners
TLDR
It is suggested that self-construal priming modulates sensitivity to perceived pain in unknown others and that this effect varies with culture.
Self-face enhances processing of immediately preceding invisible faces
Cultural difference in neural mechanisms of self-recognition
TLDR
It is suggested that enhanced social salience of one's own face results in different neurocognitive processes of self-recognition in Western and Chinese cultures.
The influence of self-construals on the ERP response to the rewards for self and mother
TLDR
The event-related potential results reveal that when an interdependent self-construal was primed, the participants exhibited a comparable feedback-related negativity (FRN) elicited by outcome feedback for self and for mother, while independent self- construal priming resulted in a greater FRN eliciting by outcome Feedback for self than for mother.
Self-Construal Priming Affects Holistic Face Processing and Race Categorization, but Not Face Recognition
TLDR
The results indicated that the cultural Differences in self-construal could not mirror the cultural differences in face processing in a simple way.
Bicultural Minds: A Cultural Priming Approach to the Self-Bias Effect
Recent research has discovered a robust bias towards the processing of self-relevant information in perceptual matching. Self-associated stimuli are processed faster and more accurately than
Dispositional Self-Construal Modulates Neural Representation of Self: An ERP Study
TLDR
The results showed greater P2 and P3 amplitudes induced by one's own than by a famous person’s name in both independent and interdependent self- construal groups, which might reflect fast modulation of self-related processing by dispositional self-construal.
Dynamic cultural modulation of neural responses to one's own and friend's faces
TLDR
It is found that an early frontal negative activity at 220–340 ms (the anterior N2) differentiated between one's own and friend's faces in both cultural groups, indicating fast modulations of culturally specific neural responses induced by temporary access to other cultural frameworks.

Neural substrates for functionally discriminating self‐face from personally familiar faces
TLDR
The results support the existence of a bilateral network for both perceptual and executive aspects of self‐face processing that cannot be accounted for by a simple hemispheric dominance model and show that these regions may serve as markers of face familiarity.

TLDR
It is shown that in humans the right hemisphere of the brain seems to be preferentially involved in self-face recognition, and this indicates that neural substrates of theright hemisphere may selectively participate in processes linked to self-awareness.
