Selenium (Se), an essential nutrient for animals and humans, occurs as selenoproteins in enzymes. It is very important in animal nutrition because it functions as an anti-oxidant assisted by vitamin E. Se deficiency is a major problem which can be reduced or prevented by supplementation with inorganic or organic sources of Se. However, excessive supplementation and consumption of Se accumulating plants may lead to Se toxicity and animal poisoning. Minimal lethal dose for animals range between 1… Expand

Designing selenium functional foods and beverages: A review.
TLDR
This review seeks to propose some possible foods that could be enriched with Se and suggests that a large portion of the population adequately consumes these proposed foods on a regular basis hence the target goal would be a success. Expand
Nanoselenium effect on growth performance, carcass traits, antioxidant activity, and immune status of broilers
TLDR
Nanoselenium can be a useful and better source of selenium for broilers and achieved the best dressing %, spleen index %, and thymus index %. Expand
Biological Role Of Selenium In The Organism Of Animals And Humans
Scientific studies of foreign and domestic scientists convincingly proved, that selenium is a vitally necessary microelement with a wide spectrum of biological action. Despite the smallExpand
Preparation of Selenium-Enriched Yeast by Re-Using Discarded Saccharomyces cerevisiae from the Beer Industry for Se-Supplemented Fodder Applications
Both inorganic and organic selenium (Se) can prevent and treat various diseases caused by Se deficiency. However, organic Se has less toxicity and a higher absorption rate than inorganic Se. In thisExpand

  • 2019
Optimum reproduction performance of small ruminants managed under extensive production system can be influenced by the availability of nutrients, especially the mineral content of forages andExpand
Se and I status in pregnant ewes from a pastoral system and the effect of supplementation with Se and I or only Se on wool quality of lambs
TLDR
Australian Merino ewes and lambs producing fine fibre wool for export are raised in the north-west of Uruguay in pasture-based systems without any additional beneficial effects of supplementation with Se and I or only Se and the effect of supplementation was observed. Expand
Potential of Nanomaterial Applications in Dietary Supplements and Foods for Special Medical Purposes
TLDR
This contribution comprehensively summarizes the current state of the research focused on nanoformulated human and veterinary dietary supplements, nutraceuticals, and functional foods for special medical purposes, their particular applications in various food products and drinks as well as the most important related guidelines, regulations and directives. Expand
Uranium and Associated Heavy Metals in Ovis aries in a Mining Impacted Area in Northwestern New Mexico
TLDR
The study findings showed that the concentrations of HMs were greatest in the liver and kidneys, and food intake recommendations informed by research are needed for individuals especially those that may be more sensitive to HMs. Expand
Application of nanoparticles in cancer therapy with an emphasis on cell cycle
TLDR
The aim of the present study is to focus on potential NPs usage in cancer treatment with an emphasis on the cell cycle of malignant cells. Expand
The role of selenium and vitamin E in a Transylvanian enzootic equine recurrent rhabdomyolysis syndrome.
TLDR
Selenium deficiency possibly has a role in the Transylvanian enzootic equine recurrent rhabdomyolysis syndrome and horses in the affected regions had significantly lower serum selenium and GSH-Px levels than animals living in the non-affected regions. Expand

The efficacy of selenium treatment of forage for the correction of selenium deficiency in horses
TLDR
Application of Se-enriched fertilizer increased the Se concentration of hay to a degree sufficient to meet the published dietary requirement for horses (0.1 mg/kg DM), and feeding of Se -enriched hay was an effective method of Se supplementation of horses. Expand
Selenium in Cattle: A Review
TLDR
The impact and results of Se supplementation in cattle depend on physiological stage, Se status of animals, type and content of Se and types of Se administration and further studies in Se supplementation should investigate the speciation of Se in food and yeasts, as well as understanding their metabolism and absorption. Expand
Selenium Deficiency and Toxicity in the Environment
Selenium (Se) is a naturally occurring metalloid element, which is essential to human and other animal health in trace amounts but is harmful in excess. Of all the elements, selenium has one of theExpand

TLDR
It is suggested that soil-Se fertilization is a potential management tool to improve Se-status and performance in weaned calves in areas with low soil- Se concentrations. Expand
Selenium-fertilized forage as a way to supplement lactating dairy cows.
TLDR
Production of Se-enriched forages is an effective method to supplement dairy cows in Se as it was more available than YSe, and did not alter antioxidant status and performances of lactating dairy cows. Expand

Metabolism of selenium and copper in sheep with and without sodium bicarbonate supplementation
TLDR
The concentration of Se in both muscle tissue and in rumen bacteria was raised by Se supplementation, but more so in both cases when Cu was not added to the diet, while interactions between Se and Cu were not influenced by NaHCO 3 supplementation. Expand
Effect of inorganic selenium supplementation on selenosis in postweaning swine.
TLDR
A total of 72 pigs weaned at 4 wk of age were allotted by litter and weight to nine treatment groups and fed 20% protein cornsoybean meal diets supplemented with various levels of inorganic Se during a 37-d postweaning period, finding abnormal hoof formation at the coronary band was evident in pigs fed diets containing Se greater than or equal to 5 ppm.
