Abstract. A Department of the Interior (DOI) irrigation drainwater study of the Uncompahgre Project area and the Grand Valley in western Colorado revealed high selenium concentrations in water, sediment, and biota samples. The lower Gunnison River and the Colorado River in the study area are designated critical habitat for the endangered Colorado pikeminnow (Ptychocheilus lucius) and razorback sucker (Xyrauchen texanus). Because of the endangered status of these fish, sacrificing individuals…

Mercury and selenium concentrations in fishes of the Upper Colorado River Basin, southwestern United States: A retrospective assessment

TLDR
It is identified that species of management concern accumulate THg and Se to levels above risk thresholds and that fishes of the White-Yampa (THg) and Gunnison (Se) rivers are at the greatest risk in the UCRB.

Evaluation of flushing of a high‐selenium backwater channel in the Colorado River

TLDR
Although selenium concentrations in water, sediment, aquatic invertebrates, and forage fish decreased substantially after operation of the water control structure, a corresponding change in Colorado pikeminnow did not seem to occur.

An Assessment of the Potential for Selenium to Impair Reproduction in Bull Trout, Salvelinus confluentus, from an Area of Active Coal Mining

TLDR
Results indicate that most bull trout captured immediately downstream from coal mining activity in the region have concentrations of Se that would be expected to impair recruitment, and it is concluded that bull trout populations in Alberta's northeast slopes region are at risk of decline.

Hypothesis of Historical Effects From Selenium on Endangered Fish in the Colorado River Basin

TLDR
Anthropogenic selenium contamination of aquatic ecosystems was first associated with cooling reservoirs of coal-fired power plants in the late 1970s, and later with drainage water from agricultural irrigation activities in the 1980s, causing concern in the recovery of currently endangered fish in the Colorado River system.

Selenium concentrations in the razorback sucker (Xyrauchen texanus): Substitution of non-lethal muscle plugs for muscle tissue in contaminant assessment

TLDR
The non-lethal collection of a muscle plug from dorsal and posterior areas of the razorback sucker and other fish species may provide an accurate assessment of selenium concentrations that exist in adjacent muscle tissue.

Selenium in eggs and milt of razorback sucker (Xyrauchen texanus) in the middle Green River, Utah

TLDR
Selenium concentrations in eggs of razorback suckers in the Green River may be sufficiently elevated to cause reproductive problems that are contributing to the decline of this species in the upper Colorado River basin.

TLDR
Hazard is characterized in terms of the potential for food-chain bioaccumulation and reproductive impairment in fish and aquatic birds, which are the most sensitive biological responses for estimating ecosystem-level impacts of selenium contamination.
