Portal hypertension (PHT) is associated with increased susceptibility of the gastric mucosa to injury by a variety of factors, including nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) that nonselectively inhibit both isoforms of cyclooxygenase (COX-1 and -2).
