We have developed general techniques for the successful selection of plant heterokaryons from parental populations of plant protoplasts subjected to somatic fusion treatments. These techniques involve a combination of artificial fluorescence labeling, natural chlorophyll autofluorescence and fluorescence-activated cell sorting.
