We developed a new method of an earthquake-resistant design to support conventional aseismic system using acoustic metamaterials. The device is an attenuator of a seismic wave that reduces the amplitude of the wave exponentially. Constructing a cylindrical shell-type waveguide composed of many Helmholtz resonators that creates a stop-band for the seismic frequency range, we convert the seismic wave into an attenuated one without touching the building that we want to protect. It is a mechanical…

There are two methods for earthquake engineering as an application of acoustic metamaterials. One is the traditional cloaking method that makes the seismic wave deflect the building to be protected.
Seismic isolation of buildings using composite foundations based on metamaterials
A different approach to seismic isolation by using certain principles of seismic metamaterials is introduced, including the local resonance and a dual-stiffness structure that preserves large (small) rigidity for compression (shear) effects.
Seismic metamaterials based on isochronous mechanical oscillators
This Letter introduces a seismic metamaterial (SM) composed by a chain of mass-in-mass system able to filter the S-waves of an earthquake. We included the effect of the SM into the mono dimensional
A seismic-shielding structure based on phononic crystal
In this paper, a seismic-shielding structure is presented based on phononic crystal, which is now used to control acoustic waves. An earthquake-proof barrier of seismic waves can be built by filling

We propose that wave propagation through a class of mechanical metamaterials opens unprecedented avenues in seismic wave protection based on spectral properties of auxetic-like metamaterials. The
Seismic auxetic metamaterials as novel earthquake protections
We propose that wave propagation through a class of elastodynamic metamaterials opens unprecedented avenues in seismic wave protection based on spectral properties of auxetic metamaterials. The
Large scale phononic metamaterials for seismic isolation
In this work, we numerically examine structures that could be characterized as large scale phononic metamaterials. These novel structures could have band gaps in the frequency spectrum of seismic
Seismic metamaterials for energy attenuation of shear horizontal waves in transversely isotropic media
Abstract We study the energy attenuation of shear horizontal waves in a half-space with an overlying layer coupled with the interaction of seismic resonators. We focus on the material anisotropic

Acoustic metamaterial with negative modulus.
Experimental and theoretical results on an acoustic metamaterial that exhibits a negative effective modulus in a frequency range from 0 to 450 Hz are presented and a theory is provided to explain the experimental results.
Broadband cylindrical acoustic cloak for linear surface waves in a fluid.
This work describes the first practical realization of a cylindrical cloak for linear surface liquid waves and demonstrates theoretically its unique mechanism using homogenization theory: the cloak behaves as an effective anisotropic fluid characterized by a diagonal stress tensor in acylindrical basis.
Ultrabroadband elastic cloaking in thin plates.
A design for a cloak to control bending waves propagating in isotropic heterogeneous thin plates is proposed, achieved through homogenization of a multilayered concentric coating filled with piecewise constant isotropIC elastic material.
Broad forbidden bands in parallel-coupled locally resonant ultrasonic metamaterials
The authors demonstrate that a class of ultrasonic metamaterial, which is composed of subwavelength resonant units built up by parallel-coupled Helmholtz resonators with identical resonant frequency,
Ultrasonic metamaterials with negative modulus
A new class of ultrasonic metamaterials consisting of an array of subwavelength Helmholtz resonators with designed acoustic inductance and capacitance with an effective dynamic modulus with negative values near the resonance frequency is reported.
Elastic metamaterials with simultaneously negative effective shear modulus and mass density.
A type of elastic metamaterial comprising fluid-solid composite inclusions which can possess a negative shear modulus and negative mass density over a large frequency region is proposed, which leads to many interesting phenomena such as negative refraction.
Two-dimensional acoustic metamaterial with negative modulus
We designed a two-dimensional acoustic metamaterial with periodical array of split hollow sphere (SHS) and investigated its transmission behaviors in the impedance tube system. The results showed
Cloaking bending waves propagating in thin elastic plates
We introduce a cylindrical cloak to control the bending waves propagating in thin plates. This is achieved through radially dependent isotropic mass density and radially dependent and orthotropic
