As part of an on-going study of segmental differentiation in the central nervous system (CNS) of the leech Hirudo medicinalis, a search was made for putative segmental homologs of the heart accessory (HA) neurons, which exist exclusively as a bilateral pair in the ganglia of the fifth and sixth body segments.
