The seed germination characteristics of retama (Purkinsoniu aculeatu) and twisted acacia (Acacia schaffneri) were investigated in relation to temperature and light regimes, substrate salinity, pH, osmotic potential, seed age, and seedling emergence. Seed germination of both species is restricted by impermeable seed coats. Soaking seeds of both species in concentrated sulfuric acid for 45 min increased germination. Retama seed germimtion was 287% at continous temperatures of 15 to 39 C and at… Expand

Ecophysiology and morphology of seed germination of the neotropical lowland tree Genipa americana (Rubiaceae)
TLDR
The seed and seed-ling morphology and the germinative responses of the species may permit its regeneration in periodically lowland forests and riparian habitats and are probably key factors in explaining the species’ wide distribution. Expand
Germination of Texas persimmon seed.
TLDR
This study determined the germination response of Texas persimmon seeds in the laboratory to certain environmental factors encountered in the seedbed, and the effect on seed germination after passing through a coyote digestive tract was studied. Expand
The germination success of Acacia longifolia subsp. longifolia (Fabaceae): a comparison between its native and exotic ranges
TLDR
Seeds from both populations decrease germination rate under increasing salt-stress and show a wide range of pH tolerance, but Australians seeds are more tolerant to increase of both parameters, while Portuguese seeds are bigger and germinated from deeper depths than the Australian. Expand
INFLUENCE OF ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS ON GERMINATION AND EMERGENCE OF PUERARIA LOBATA
TLDR
Germination occurred over a range of alternating temperatures from 15/6 to 35/25 C, and at all temperature regimes, percentage germination was much greater for hand-scarified seed than for nonscarified seed, indicating that P lobata seed possesses physical dormancy. Expand
ALBIZIA ZYGIA (DC) MACBRIDE, A SHADE TREE FOR COCOA. THE EFFECTS OF DURATION OF ACID SCARIFICATION AND SUBSTRATE ACIDITY ON THE GERMINATION OF SEEDS
TLDR
Results indicate that germination and early root growth in A. zygia are relatively tolerant of low pH soils, which support the species as a possible candidate for the amelioration of degraded cocoa soils in Ghana. Expand
Germination Kinetics in Two Acacia karroo Hayne Ecotypes under Salinity Conditions
TLDR
The results revealed the existence of a significant variation in the germinative behaviour of A. karroo seeds collected from two ecotypes geographically and climatically different (Coastal and Steppic area) in salt stress. Expand
Wet heat as a mechanism for dormancy release and germination of seeds with physical dormancy
TLDR
The sensitivity of dormancy to naturally encountered temperature ranges suggests that wet heat is an important dormancy release mechanism and one that can be exploited when developing management strategies for invasive populations. Expand
Germination of kadad (Dichrostachys cinerea) seed following pod digestion by goats, and various chemical treatments
TLDR
Germination was significantly increased in acid-scarified seeds and reduced in seeds passed through goats' digestive systems, and was inversely related to NaCl concentration. Expand
Wet-season dormancy release in seed banks of a tropical leguminous shrub is determined by wet heat.
TLDR
Results demonstrate that wet heat is the principal dormancy release mechanism for P. aculeata when conditions are hot and wet, and highlight the potential importance of microclimate in driving the population dynamics of such species. Expand
Germinação de sementes de plantas daninhas de pastagens cultivadas: Mimosa pudica e Ipomoea asarifolia.
TLDR
The results showed that soil factors such as aluminum, pH, calcium, and magnesium did not influence the germination of the two weed species, and both species responded negatively to the increase in salt concentration, with M. pudica being more tolerant to salt than I. asarifolia. Expand

Seed germination characteristics of three woody plant species from South Texas Blackbrush, Acacia rigidula, guajillo, Acacia berlandieri, and guayacan, Porlieria angustifolia.
TLDR
The seed germination of blackbrush, guajillo, and guayacan plants was investigated in relation to temperature and various regimes of light; substrate salinity, pH, and osmotic potential; seed age; and site of seed source. Expand
Chemical composition of native range grasses growing on saline soils of the South Texas Plains.
TLDR
Levels of CP, P, Ca, Mg, K,and Na were generally highest after periods of adequate rainfall in late spring, summer, and early fall and lowest in late fall as the grasses went into dormancy and levels of Ca and Mg remained relatively stable through the growing season and showed little relationship to rainfall.
