The study of the sediments and sedimentary processes operating on the continental shelf off Bombay revealed that the continental shelf in general and the area of study in particular is floored with three distinct sedimentary facies. The boundaries between these are gradational to each other. The first two facies of sand and mud are geologically recent while the outer shelf relict carbonate sediments are of late Pleistocene, formed at the time of lowered sea levels.
