Heterogeneous nuclear RNA (hnRNA) from HeLa cells contains intramolecular duplexes. Since hnRNA is associated with protein in vivo, it is possible that the double-stranded regions observed in deproteinized hnRNA form spontaneously upon the release of protein from single-stranded but potentially complementary sequences.
