Loaches of the genus Cobitis of the subfamily Cobitinae are small benthic freshwater fishes with a wide distribution area covering large parts of Eurasia and one additional species in north-west Africa. Classification of the genus Cobitis has been studied by many authors in China, and eight species of this genus were described. They are Cobitis macrostigma Dabry, 1872, Cobitz's sinensis Sauvage et Dabry, 1874, Cobitis dolichorhynchus Nichols, 1918, Cobitis melanoleuca Nichols, 1925, Cobitis…

Three new species of cobitid fish genus Cobitis (Teleostei, Cobitidae) from the River Pearl basin of China

Abstract. Morphology features and sequences of mitochondrial cytochrome b (cyt b) gene were analyzed of the species Cobitis Linnaeus, 1758 from the River Pearl basin of China. Three new species of

Three new species of cobitid fish (Teleostei, Cobitidae) from the River Xinjiang and the River Le'anjiang, tributaries of Lake Poyang of China, with remarks on their classification

Three new species of Cobitis are described based on the morphology features such as the pigmentation pattern, shape of lamina circularis, body scales, mouth character and sequences of mitochondrial cytochrome b (cyt b) gene, which can be used for molecular identification and diagnosis of these species.

Two new species of the genus Cobitis Linnaeus (Teleostei: Cobitidae) from southern China

Two new species of the genus Cobitis from southern China, C. hereromacula from the Luohe River in Guangdong Province and C. baishagensis from the Nandujiang River in Hainan Province, are described

Redescription of †Cobitis longipectoralis Zhou, 1992 (Cypriniformes: Cobitidae) from late early Miocene of East China

A well-preserved specimen collected recently from the taxon’s type locality of the late early Miocene of Shanwang, Shandong Province, East China enables us to provide an emended diagnosis and more detailed description of the species by focusing on characters such as the structures of the suborbital spine.

Multiple invasions of Europe by East Asian cobitid loaches (Teleostei: Cobitidae)

The present results support the view that Asian cobitid fishes may have invaded Europe at least five times independently, and once reverse colonization of European cobitids to East Asia could also be found.

First fossil cobitid (Teleostei: Cypriniformes) from Early- Middle Oligocene deposits of South China

The discovery of the new species and other previously known fossils of Cobitis indicate that the Cobitidae family has had a wide distribution in Eurasia since at least Oligocene.

Diverse processes shape deep phylogeographical divergence in Cobitis sinensis (Teleostei: Cobitidae) in East Asia

It was showed that Cenozoic tectonic movements and climatic and sea-level fluctuations may have shaped the genetic structure of C. sinensis in concert.

Microhabitat Use and Population Structure of a Chinese Kissing Loach, Leptobotia tchangi , in the North Tiaoxi River, China

Maintenance of the rapid current and variety of substrate are essential for the conservation of this species under the present conditions in the river, which also can support river restoration being in harmony with survival of this kissing loach.

Cobitis sakahoko, a new species of spined loach (Cypriniformes: Cobitidae) from southern Kyushu Island, Japan

A new species of spined loach is described, Cobitis sakahoko, based on the holotype and nine paratypes collected from the Oyodo River system in the southern region of Kyushu Island, Japan, distinguished from its congeners by the following combination of characteristics.
