Transient ischaemic attack (TIA) and stroke are clinical syndromes characterised by acute neurological deficits with vascular causes. People experiencing TIA or a first stroke are at significant risk of subsequent stroke. Risk factors have been identified and include factors associated with lifestyle such as tobacco use, diet, obesity, alcohol consumption, physical activity and stress. Targeted therapeutic interventions have the potential to reduce the burden of stroke substantially. The aim of…
Secondary Stroke Prevention through Patient Education Intervention on Lifestyle Risk Factors: A Review
TLDR
A review of literature pertaining to the risk factors associated with stroke highlighting the lifestyle risk factors is provided and the importance of systematic patient education process and applying health promotion theories in lifestyle intervention is discussed.
Effects of early exercise engagement on vascular risk in patients with transient ischemic attack and nondisabling stroke.

TLDR
It is emphasised that providing support to families and carers is a particularly important element of caring for people who have experienced a stroke, with nurses performing a central role.
A feasibility study to identify attitudes, determine outcome measures and develop an intervention to inform a definitive trial that will determine the effectiveness of adapted cardiac rehabilitation for sub-acute stroke and TIA patients.
TLDR
This mixed-methods thesis establishes the feasibility of conducting a definitive study investigating the effect of six weeks of adapted CR on CRf, blood pressure, heart rate, activity levels, quality of life, fatigue, tone, falls, body mass index, anxiety and depression for people with mild to moderate stroke in the sub-acute stage of recovery.

TLDR
The Stroke Association believes that 20,000 strokes per year in the UK could be avoided through effective prevention, increasing the quality of life of those affected as well as saving on the cost of care.
Fruit consumption and physical activity in relation to all-cause and cardiovascular mortality among 70,000 Chinese adults with pre-existing vascular disease
TLDR
Among Chinese adults with pre-existing vascular disease, higher physical activity and fruit consumption were both independently and jointly associated with lower mortality.
Steps Against Recurrent Stroke Plus: Patient Transition Program
TLDR
Findings demonstrate a reduction in rehospitalization after stroke, increased medication adherence, strong patient satisfaction, and significant differences in health-related outcome measures across age groups, suggesting that middle-aged stroke survivors experience better health outcomes than younger or older age groups.
An auditing of brain computed tomograms of cerebro-vascular accident patients in Douala, Cameroon
TLDR
Ischaemic CVA is more common than haemorrhagic CVA, and the middle cerebral arteries followed by anterior cerebral artery are the commonest vascular territories affected.
Stroke patients’ adherence to nurses’ advice and their quality of life after admittance to Hospital Tengku Ampuan Afzan
TLDR
Healthcare professionals, such as nurses, have substantial roles in ensuring stroke patients adhere to rehabilitation guidelines with a view to maximising quality of life, and there is a positive correlation between adherence and the quality oflife.

TLDR
The combination of 5 proven strategies applied to survivors of an initial stroke or transient ischemic attack—dietary modification, exercise, aspirin, a statin, and an antihypertensive agent—could result in a cumulative relative risk reduction of 80%.

Implementation of this single-center, systems-based, in-hospital program to initiate secondary stroke prevention therapies was associated with a substantial increase in treatment utilization at the time of hospital discharge.

Through an integrated system of education, advice and support to both patient and GP, the ICARUSS model was effective in modifying a variety of vascular risk factors and therefore should decrease the likelihood or recurrent stroke or vascular event.
Cigarette smoking as a risk factor for stroke. The Framingham Study.
TLDR
Smoking was significantly related to stroke after age and hypertension were taken into account and even after pertinent cardiovascular disease risk factors were added to the Cox model, cigarette smoking continued to make a significant independent contribution to the risk of stroke generally and brain infarction specifically.

TLDR
Permanent self-perceived psychological stress during the last year or longer was independently associated with overall ischemic stroke, and a novel finding was that this association differed by isChemic stroke subtype.

TLDR
It is indicated that heavy alcohol consumption increases the relative risk of stroke while light or moderate alcohol consumption may be protective against total and ischemic stroke.
