Abstract Seabird mortality in longline fishing has been implicated in the decline of many populations around the world. The population of the Black-browed Albatross breeding in the Falkland Islands has been estimated to have declined by 87500 pairs between 1995 and 2000. The observed mortality in the Patagonian Toothfish longline fishery in Falkland Islands waters in 2001–02 was 29 seabirds, including 27 Black-browed Albatrosses, giving an estimated total mortality of 134 (95% confidence limits…

Demographic parameters of black-browed albatrosses Thalassarche melanophris from the Falkland Islands

The results indicate that the Falklands population of black-browed albatross may not be as threatened as previously supposed, although studies from more sites and a longer time series are needed to confirm or refute this.

Bycatch rates of seabirds in the Brazilian domestic pelagic longline fleet from 2001 to 2007 on the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and adjacent international waters of the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean are presented and a review of bycatch rates reported for the area is reviewed.

Estimating mortality of black-browed albatross (Thalassarche melanophris, Temminck, 1828) and other seabirds in the Argentinean factory trawl fleet and the use of bird-scaring lines as a mitigation measure

Bird-scaring lines eliminated seabird mortality caused by collisions with trawl cables and are recommended as a short- to medium-term measure to mitigate seabirds mortality in this fishery.

Characterizing seabird bycatch in the eastern Australian tuna and billfish pelagic longline fishery in relation to temporal, spatial and biological influences.

The use of live fish bait was generally associated with increased captures of both seabirds overall, and flesh-footed shearwaters in particular, with bycatch being lowest in winter, and remaining at similar levels across the other seasons.

Seabird bycatch in the Brazilian pelagic longline fishery and a review of capture rates in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean

The southwestern Atlantic Ocean is an important foraging ground throughout the year for several albatross and petrel species. Longline fishing fleets in the region currently pose the main threat for

Environmental and operational variability affecting the mortality of Black-browed Albatrosses associated with long-liners in Argentina

Seasonal differences in the distribution of captures were observed, being widely distributed to the north of the shelf-break during autumn—winter and mostly concentrated in southernmost latitudes, closer to the presumed breeding area in the Malvinas (Falkland) Islands during spring—summer.

Assessing the impact of the pelagic longline fishery on albatrosses and petrels in the southwest Atlantic

The black-browed (Thalassarche melanophrys) and Atlantic yellow-nosed (Thalassarche chlororhynchos) albatrosses and the white-chinned petrel (Procellaria aequinoctialis) are the seabird species most

The Patagonian toothfish: biology, ecology and fishery.

Seabird mortality in the Namibian demersal longline fishery and recommendations for best practice mitigation measures

Abstract Seabird bycatch is widely regarded as the greatest threat globally to procellariiform seabirds. Although measures to reduce seabird–fishery interactions have been in existence for many

Seabird mortality in the Patagonian toothfish longline fishery around the Prince Edward Islands, 1996–2000

It is estimated that the combined impact of legal and IUU longline fishing around the Prince Edward Islands over the past four years could have resulted in between 7000 and 17 000 seabird mortalities and could have had significant impacts on the breeding populations of several seabirds species breeding on the PrinceEdward Islands.

This paper analyses all incidental mortality of seabirds recorded on Argentinian and Chilean vessels fishing for Patagonian toothfish (Dissostichus eleginoides) in Subarea 48.3 during the 1995

Preliminary stock assessment of the Patagonian toothfish longline fishery around the Falkland Islands

An initial analysis of toothfish numbers caught in 1994 suggests that these are changing at rates faster than expected from simple demographic processes, and it is still not possible to derive reliable estimates for the size of the toothfish population currently exploited around the Falkland Islands.

Seabird mortality in longline fisheries around South Georgia

Incidental mortality of Southern Ocean seabirds due to fishing activities well away from the breeding grounds has been implicated in the population declines of wandering albatross (Diomedea exulans)

Estimates of seabird by-catch along the Patagonian Shelf by Argentine longline fishing vessels, 1999–2001

The first direct estimates of incidental mortality rates of albatrosses and petrels along the Argentine Shelf and shelf break are provided, indicating that annual by-catch may be in the order of thousands, with around 10,000 seabirds being killed by longliners through the study period.

Foraging distribution of the black-browed albatross, Thalassarche melanophris, breeding in the Falkland Islands

1.The overall foraging distribution of black-browed albatross from the Falkland Islands is described, based on data from two different stages of the breeding season and two separate breeding sites,

The importance of the Patagonian Shelf for top predator species breeding at South Georgia

The Patagonian Shelf is, therefore, not only of global importance for the diversity and abundance of its resident top predators but is just as critical for the survival of many visiting species, some of which are even more endangered.
