ABSTR ACT. Sea-ice extent and concentrati on are routinely measured using satellite sensors. However, regiona l estim ates of sea-ice thickness can not be measured direc tly from space, and la rgely depend on field observations within the pack ice. One difficulty is estimating the amount of ice contained in pressure ridges. These ridges can contribute substantially to the total ice volume, yet are highly variable both spatially and temporally.
