Due to the complex mechanisms involved in butanol-induced stress response, butanol tolerance phenotype is difficult to engineer even in microorganisms with well-defined genetic backgrounds. We therefore aimed to isolate butanol-tolerant microorganisms from environmental samples as potential alternative hosts for butanol production. Soil samples collected were subjected to butanol stress. A microbial strain capable of 2.5–3 % (w/v) butanol tolerance was isolated and identified as Enterococcus… Expand
Isolation and molecular characterization of butanol tolerant bacterial strains for improved biobutanol production.
TLDR
It was found that a growth barrier existed between 1 to 5%butanol concentrations and only few selected isolates could tolerate upto 5% butanol after long term adaptation. Expand
Isolation of Butanol- and Isobutanol-Tolerant Bacteria and Physiological Characterization of Their Butanol Tolerance
TLDR
It is demonstrated that a wide variety of butanol- and isobutanol-tolerant bacteria that can grow in 2.0% butanol exist in the environment and have various strategies to maintain structural integrity against detrimental solvents. Expand
pH-induced change in cell susceptibility to butanol in a high butanol-tolerant bacterium, Enterococcus faecalis strain CM4A
TLDR
The study clearly demonstrated the alkaline pH-induced increase of cell susceptibility to butanol in the tested strain, indicating the non-negligible impact of pH on microbial butanol tolerance, providing a new insight into efficient butanol production. Expand
Butanol tolerance of carboxydotrophic bacteria isolated from manure composts
TLDR
The carboxydotrophic strains screened in this study have high tolerance to butanol and natural production of low concentration of butanol from CO, which distinguish them from other screened butanol-tolerant strains. Expand
Isolation and characterization of butanol-tolerant Staphylococcus aureus
TLDR
This is the first study to observe butanol-tolerant S. aureus, and as this organism can be genetically manipulated, it could have a wide array of applications. Expand
Acetone, butanol, and ethanol production from gelatinized cassava flour by a new isolates with high butanol tolerance.
TLDR
The results indicate that the simple but effective isolation method and acclimatization process are a promising technique for isolation and improvement of butanol tolerance and production. Expand
Optimization of n-butanol synthesis in Lactobacillus brevis via the functional expression of thl, hbd, crt and ter.
TLDR
This strategy significantly improved n-butanol synthesis in L. brevis and the final titer is the highest achieved amongst butanol-tolerant lactic acid bacteria. Expand
The significance of proline and glutamate on butanol chaotropic stress in Bacillus subtilis 168
TLDR
The important role of proline is revealed as an effective compatible solute that is required to protect cells against butanol chaotropic effect and to maintain cellular functions in B. subtilis 168 during butanol exposure. Expand
Enhanced butanol production by solvent tolerance Clostridium acetobutylicum SE25 from cassava flour in a fibrous bed bioreactor.
TLDR
It is successfully comfirmed that the biofilm can provide an effective protection for the microbial cells which are growing in stressful environment. Expand
Construction of CoA-dependent 1-butanol synthetic pathway functions under aerobic conditions in Escherichia coli.
TLDR
A CoA-dependent 1-butanol synthetic pathway that functions under aerobic conditions in Escherichia coli is constructed, by expanding the previously reported (R)-1,3-butanediol synthetic pathway. Expand

Butanol Tolerance in a Selection of Microorganisms
TLDR
It is found that in general, a barrier to growth exists between 1% and 2% butanol and few microorganisms can tolerate 2% Butanol, and several strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae exhibit limited growth in 2%butanol, while two strains of Lactobacillus were able to tolerate and grow in up to 3% but ethanol. Metabolic engineering of Saccharomyces cerevisiae for the production of n-butanol
TLDR
Saccharomyces cerevisiae was engineered with an n-butanol biosynthetic pathway, in which isozymes from a number of different organisms were substituted for Clostridial enzymes and their effect on n- butanol production was compared. Expand
Functional Genomic Study of Exogenous n-Butanol Stress in Escherichia coli
TLDR
Cell-wide studies were conducted at the transcript, protein, and metabolite levels to obtain a global view of the n-butanol stress response, allowing identification of key genes that were recruited to alleviate oxidative stress, protein misfolding, and other causes of growth defects. Expand
A transcriptional study of acidogenic chemostat cells of Clostridium acetobutylicum--solvent stress caused by a transient n-butanol pulse.
TLDR
The main result of this analysis was the observation that genes involved in amino acid and nucleotide biosynthesis, as well as genes for specific transport systems were upregulated by n- butanol, confirming that C. acetobutylicum modifies the cytoplasmic membrane composition in response to n-butanol stress. Expand
Engineering solventogenic clostridia.
TLDR
Solventogenic clostridia are strictly anaerobic, endospore forming bacteria that produce a large array of primary metabolites by anaerobically degrading simple and complex carbohydrates, including cellulose and hemicellulose, which suggest that they are promising organisms for biorefinery applications. Effects of butanol on Clostridium acetobutylicum
TLDR
Experiments using N,N'-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide indicated that a functioning H+-ATPase is necessary for internal pH control, and suggested that the butanol-mediated decrease in ATP concentration was independent of the drop in internal pH. Expand
