Scorpions of Europe

@inproceedings{Fet2010ScorpionsOE,

This brief review summarizes the studies in systematics and zoogeography of European scorpions. The current “splitting” trend in scorpion taxonomy is only a reasonable response to the former “lumping.” Our better understanding of scorpion systematics became possible due to the availability of new morphological characters and molecular techniques, as well as of new material. Many taxa and local faunas are still under revision. The total number of native scorpion species in Europe could easily be…

Three more species of Euscorpius confirmed for Greece (Scorpiones: Euscorpiidae)

New morphological data and redescriptions of type specimens of three “old” taxa, described from Greece and formerly listed under a “catch-all”taxon Euscorpius carpathicus are provided.

Ecology and biogeography of the endemic scorpion Euscorpius carpathicus (Scorpiones: Euscorpiidae): a multiscale analysis

Using field data, literature review, species distribution modelling, and habitat selection models, this work documents the broad scale distribution and ecology of E. carpathicus, as well as habitat selection in the foothills of the Curvature Carpathians, including exclusive microhabitat selection of riverine clay banks.

The northernmost Palearctic scorpion

This note focuses on the northernmost known scorpion population of the Palearctic (above 51°N), from the Aituar Steppe in the Orenburg Nature.

Geographical Distribution of the Genus Mesobuthus (Scorpiones: Buthidae) in Mongolia

The diversity of scorpions in six provinces of Mongolia between 2001 and 2012 was surveyed and the occurrence of the species Mesobuthus eupeus mongolicus was confirmed and the presence of M. Martensii martensii was reported for the first time.

A revision of the Anatolian-Caucasian “ Euscorpius mingrelicus complex” (Scorpiones: Euscorpiidae)

The taxonomic status of the Anatolian-Caucasian subspecies of Euscorpius mingrelicus (Kessler, 1874) is reconsidered and it is elevated to species status three of its subspecies.

Biological and ecological observations on Mesobuthus gibbosus (Brullé, 1832) (Scorpiones: Buthidae)

It was noted that the reproductive period was the most active period for the species and some information is provided about maternal care, giving birth, molting, feeding habits, and effects of the lunar cycle on M. gibbosus.

French Scorpionism (Mainland and Oversea Territories): Narrative Review of Scorpion Species, Scorpion Venom, and Envenoming Management

France does not have scorpion antivenom, as scorpion stings are generally not fatal, but in the case of heart failure, the use of dobutamine can improve survival and pregnant women must consult an obstetrician because of the elevated risk of preterm birth or stillbirth.

A new Euscorpius species (Scorpiones: Euscorpiidae) from a Dinaric cave - the first record of troglobite scorpion in European fauna

The characteristics of the new species are compared with the characteristics of an immature male specimen of troglophile Euscorpius feti Tropea, 2013 of the same size, from another cave in Montenegro, and identified differences indicate evolutionary changes that are the result of the process of adaptation ofTroglobite scorpions for life under conditions found in underground habitats.

Redescription of Euscorpius tauricus (C.L. Koch, 1837), with the description of two new related species from Greece (Scorpiones: Euscorpiidae)

Identity and level of divergence of these taxa is confirmed by multiple DNA markers and two new species related to E. tauricus are described.

Notes on the distribution of the species of the genus Buthus (Leach, 1815) (Scorpiones, Buthidae) in Europe, with a description of a new species from Spain

Summary Two new species of the genus Buthus (Leach, 1815) were described in 2004 in Spain: B. montanus Lourenço & Vachon, 2004 and B. ibericus Lourenço & Vachon, 2004. Gantenbein & Largiadèr (2003)

The scorpions (Arachnida: Scorpiones) of the Aegean area: current problems in taxonomy and biogeography.

A longer-termed research project is now introduced to analyze the scorpion fauna of the Aegean area on a larger scale and with requested close collaboration of zoologists from universities in Greece, Turkey and Cyprus.

A REVIEW OF AND ADDITIONS TO THE CURRENT KNOWLEDGE OF THE SCORPION GENUS EUSCORPIUS THORELL, 1876 (SCORPIONES, EUSCORPIIDAE)

The main aim of this work is to provide a complete review which will be useful both to have clearance on current systematics of the complex genus Euscorpius and to interpret possible future taxonomic rearrangements.

Compléments à la faune de scorpions (Arachnida) de l'Afrique du Nord, avec des considérations sur le genre Buthus Leach, 1815

Results of the study of an interesting collection of North African scorpions, now deposited in the Geneva Museum, and five new species belonging to the genus Buthus (Buthidae) are described, i.e. Buthus mariefranceae sp.

The life history of Euscorpius flavicaudis (Scorpiones, Chactidae).

Evidence strongly suggests that there are two instars of adults of the Euscorpius flavi- caudis: some males and females mature at the sixth instar and some at the seventh.

A new species of Buthus Leach, 1815 from Cyprus (Scorpiones, Buthidae)

The questionable presence of the genus Buthus in the Cyprus is rediscussed and a new species Buthus kunti sp.

Fauna and Zoogeography of Scorpions (Arachnida: Scorpiones) in Bulgaria

Taxonomic affinities of Bulgarian scorpion taxa are discussed, as well as their geographic and altitudinal distribution.

New molecular and morphological data on the "Euscorpius carpathicus" species complex (Scorpiones: Euscorpiidae) from Italy, Malta, and Greece justify the elevation of E. c. sicanus (C. L. Koch, 1837) to the species level

The first mitochondrial DNA phylogeny (based on 17 unique haplotypes) is presented for a number of scorpion populations from Italy, Malta, and Greece, previously classified under the "catch-all" name Euscorpius carpathicus, confirming the existence of two lineages.

THE FIRST DNA PHYLOGENY OF FOUR SPECIES OF MESOBUTHUS (SCORPIONES, BUTHIDAE) FROM EURASIA

The first molecular phylogeny is presented for four species of the scorpion genus Mesobuthus, based on DNA sequences of three gene fragments, revealing a clear deep splitting between the “western clade” consisting of M. eupeus and M. caucasicus and the possible existence of multiple species.

AN EXTREMELY LOW GENETIC DIVERGENCE ACROSS THE RANGE OF EUSCORPIUS ITALICUS (SCORPIONES, EUSCORPIIDAE)

Abstract Little or no genetic divergence is detected using mitochondrial 16S rDNA sequence comparisons across the entire geographic range of the scorpion Euscorpius italicus (Herbst 1800) from
