Schizophrenia-spectrum risk alleles may persist in the population, despite their reproductive costs in individuals with schizophrenia, through the possible creativity benefits of mild schizotypy in non-psychotic relatives. To assess this creativity-benefit model, we measured creativity (using 6 verbal and 8 drawing tasks), schizotypy, Big Five personality traits, and general intelligence in 225 University of New Mexico students. Multiple regression analyses showed that openness and intelligence… Expand

From madness to genius: The Openness/Intellect trait domain as a paradoxical simplex
A novel theory of Openness/Intellect is proposed, which integrates intelligence and positive schizotypy (or apophenia, false detection of patterns or causal connections) within the Big Five.Expand
The Role of Schizotypy in Predicting Performance on Figural and Verbal Imagery-Based Measures of Creativity
There are many anecdotal reports of a link between psychopathology and creativity. The strongest links have been purported between creativity psychosis, schizotypy, and personality. The aim of thisExpand
Mad genius revisited: Vulnerability to psychopathology, biobehavioral approach-avoidance, and creativity.
TLDR
The theoretical framework, along with the meta-analytic results, indicates when and why specific psychopathologies, and their inclinations, associate with increased or, instead, reduced creativity. Expand
Divergent Thinking Abilities Across the Schizophrenic Spectrum and Other Psychological Correlates
The literature on the connection between psychopathology and creativity is vast and recent research has focused on the relationship between the schizophrenic spectrum and creativity. TheExpand
Schizotypy--do not worry, it is not all worrisome.
TLDR
Future studies should explore the behavioral, genetic, imaging, and psychopharmacological correlates that define the healthy expression of psychotic-like traits, and inform on protective or compensatory mechanisms of psychosis-risk and could usefully inform us on the evolutionary advantages of the psychosis dimension. Expand
Intelligence, personality and schizotypy as predictors of insight
Abstract Like divergent thinking tasks used in traditional creativity tests, insight problems require the subject to step out of his commonly employed cognitive framework and acquire novelExpand

The role of intellectual openness in the relationship between hand preference and positive schizotypy
TLDR
Responses on handedness questionnaires partially reflect personality variables, and such effects should be considered in future research on the nature of the relationship between handedness and schizotypy. Expand
Schizotypal traits in painters: Relations with intelligence, creativity and creative productivity
In the present research we explored the presence of schizotypal traits in painters. Furthermore, the relations of schizotypy and creativity-related variables (intelligence, creativity and creativeExpand
Openness to experience, intellect, schizotypal personality disorder, and psychoticism: resolving the controversy.
TLDR
The authors identify several limitations in the literature, including inattention to differences in the conceptualization of OE/I in the questionnaire and lexical traditions and the symptom heterogeneity of STPD, and address these limitations in two large patient samples. Expand

Negative Schizotypal Traits in the Relation of Creativity to Psychopathology
Schizotypal traits and symptoms provide a framework for understanding an individual's proneness to psychosis. Schizotypy also has proven to be an important variable in understanding the link betweenExpand

TLDR
It is shown that two components of schizotypy are positively correlated with mating success and this relationship is mediated by creative activity, which is related to the evolution of human creativity and the genesis of schizophrenia. Expand

Are Creativity and Schizotypy Products of a Right Hemisphere Bias?
TLDR
Dichotic listening results revealed a strong association of better right hemisphere (left ear) localization ability and creativity, consistent with individual differences in creativity and schizotypy being partly related to a response criterion favoring right hemisphere, possibly nonconscious, processing.
