In this article we discuss the dynamical features of intermittent fluctuations in homogeneous shear flow turbulence. In this flow the energy cascade is strongly modified by the production of turbulent kinetic energy related to the presence of vortical structures induced by the shear. As a consequence, the intermittency of velocity fluctuations increases with respect to homogeneous and isotropic turbulence. By using direct numerical simulations, we show that the refined Kolmogorov similarity is…
Inertial particles in homogeneous shear turbulence
The characteristics of inertial particles distribution in a uniformly sheared turbulent flow are investigated, with the aim of quantifying the effects associated with the large-scale anisotropy
Scale-by-scale budget and similarity laws for shear turbulence
Turbulent shear flows, such as those occurring in the wall region of turbulent boundary layers, show a substantial increase of intermittency in comparison with isotropic conditions. This suggests a
Decay and growth laws in homogeneous shear turbulence
ABSTRACT Homogeneous anisotropic turbulence has been widely studied in the past decades, both numerically and experimentally. Shear flows have received a particular attention because of the numerous
Acceleration of small heavy particles in homogeneous shear flow: direct numerical simulation and stochastic modelling of under-resolved intermittent turbulence
The acceleration of inertial particles in a homogeneous shear flow may vigorously respond to the intense flow structures induced by the mean shear. In this study, by direct numerical simulation (DNS)
Influence of localized unsteady ejection on the scaling laws and intermittency in a turbulent boundary layer flow
The effects of localized unsteady ejection by synthetic jet with slot-type exit on a turbulent boundary layer at zero pressure gradient conditions were investigated downstream of the slot using
Incompressible Homogeneous Anisotropic Turbulence: Pure Shear
This chapter is devoted to the pure shear case. Main results of Reynolds Stress Models are given, and the specificity of Rapid Distortion Theory is investigated for transient growth, in terms of

A detailed statistical analysis of fluctuations of a passive scalar in the fully developed region of a turbulent mixing layer from a direct numerical simulation is presented.
A simple model for self-sustained oscillations in homogeneous shear flow
Generation of the large-scale coherent vortical structures in homogeneous shear flow couples dynamical processes of energy and enstrophy production. In the large rate of strain limit, the simple

Turbulence in homogeneous shear flows
Homogeneous shear flows with an imposed mean velocity U=Syx are studied in a period box of size Lx×Ly×Lz, in the statistically stationary turbulent state. In contrast with unbounded shear flows, the
Structure of turbulence at high shear rate
The structure of homogeneous turbulence subject to high shear rate has been investigated by using three-dimensional, time-dependent numerical simulations of the Navier–Stokes equations. The
Intermittency and Structure Functions in Channel Flow Turbulence
We present a study of intermittency in a turbulent channel flow. Scaling exponents of longitudinal streamwise structure functions, zpyz3, are used as quantitative indicators of intermittency. We find
Experiments in nearly homogeneous turbulent shear flow with a uniform mean temperature gradient. Part 2. The fine structure
Previous measurements in nearly homogeneous sheared turbulence with a uniform mean temperature gradient are here supplemented with data on the fine structure of the velocity and temperature
The structure of highly sheared turbulence
Uniformly sheared flows have been generated in a high-speed wind tunnel at shear rates higher than previously achieved, in an effort to approach those in the inner turbulent boundary layer. As at
Numerical experiments in homogeneous turbulence
The direct simulation methods developed by Orszag and Patternson (1972) for isotropic turbulence were extended to homogeneous turbulence in an incompressible fluid subjected to uniform deformation or
The structure of the vorticity field in homogeneous turbulent flows
The structure of the vorticity fields in homogeneous turbulent shear flow and various irrotational straining flows is examined using results from direct numerical simulations of the unsteady,
Experiments on nearly homogeneous turbulent shear flow
With a transverse array of channels of equal widths but differing resistances, we have generated an improved approximation to spatially homogeneous turbulent shear flow. The scales continue to grow
