The present study aimed to elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying the induction of cytotoxic effects by sasanquasaponin (SQS) in HepG2 cells. Following SQS treatment, time- and dose-dependent increases in the apoptotic rate were observed. The induction of cell death by SQS mainly occurs via programmed cell death, as indicated by Annexin V-fluorescein isothiocyanate and propidium iodide staining, where up to 30% apoptotic cells were detected following 12 h SQS treatment. Gigantol attenuates the proliferation of human liver cancer HepG2 cells through the PI3K/Akt/NF-κB signaling pathway.
TLDR
The present data suggest that gigantol induces growth inhibition and apoptosis of HepG2 cells via the PI3K/Akt/NF-κB signaling pathway.
Taurine Upregulates miRNA-122-5p Expression and Suppresses the Metabolizing Enzymes of Glycolytic Pathway in Hepatocellular Carcinoma.
TLDR
Observations showed that taurine inhibits HepG2 cell proliferation and restores the expression of miR-122-5p which inhibits the hallmark glycolytic enzymes and ultimately the metabolic activity of HCC cells.
Hydrazinocurcumin Induces Apoptosis of Hepatocellular Carcinoma Cells Through the p38 MAPK Pathway
TLDR
Evidence is provided that HZC exerted anti-oncogenic and pro-apoptosis effects in HCC cells through activation of the p38 MAPK pathway.
Quinalizarin exerts an anti-tumour effect on lung cancer A549 cells by modulating the Akt, MAPK, STAT3 and p53 signalling pathways.
TLDR
The results of the present study demonstrated that quinalizarin induces G0/G1 phase cell cycle arrest and apoptosis via ROS mediated‑MAPK and STAT3 signalling pathways.
Hepatitis C Virus Nonstructural 5A Protein (HCV-NS5A) Inhibits Hepatocyte Apoptosis through the NF-κb/miR-503/bcl-2 Pathway
TLDR
A possible molecular mechanism that may contribute to HCV treatment is suggested, in which NS5A inhibits NF-κB activation to decrease miR-503 expression and increase bcl-2 expression, which leads to a decrease in hepatocellular apoptosis.
Shensongyangxin protects cardiomyocytes against LPS-induced injury through the NFκB pathway
TLDR
Results indicate that the activation of NFκB may be responsible for LPS-induced cardiac injury and SSYX conferred a protecting effect on cardiomyocytes exposed to LPS possibly by inhibiting theNFκB pathway.
Investigation of the Effects of Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA) and Perfluorooctane Sulfonate (PFOS) on Apoptosis and Cell Cycle in a Zebrafish (Danio rerio) Liver Cell Line
TLDR
Both PFOA and PFOS inhibited the growth of zebrafish liver cells, and the inhibition rate of PFOS was higher than that of PFO a, indicating that P FOA-IC80 and PF OS-IC50 enhanced apoptosis in ZFL cells.
Multidirectional effects of triterpene saponins on cancer cells - mini-review of in vitro studies.
TLDR
The inhibition of cancer cell proliferation, the induction of apoptosis and attenuation of cell invasiveness is observed in the presence of low saponin concentrations, which illustrates the relationships between the action of saponins, and the momentary genomic/proteomic status of cancer cells.
The Effect of Ursolic Acid on Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis Is Related to Programed Cell Death and Presents Therapeutic Potential in Experimental Cutaneous Leishmaniasis
TLDR
It is shown, for the first time, that UA eliminate promastigote forms through a mechanism associated with programed cell death, and importantly, was effective in vivo.

Regulation of p53-, Bcl-2- and caspase-dependent signaling pathway in xanthorrhizol-induced apoptosis of HepG2 hepatoma cells.
TLDR
Xanthorrhizol exerts antiproliferative effects on HepG2 cells by inducing apoptosis via the mitochondrial pathway, resulting in a shift in the Bax to Bcl-2 ratio thus favouring apoptosis.
Hedyotis Diffusa Willd extract induces apoptosis via activation of the mitochondrion-dependent pathway in human colon carcinoma cells.
TLDR
It is found that the HT-29 cell growth inhibitory activity of EEHDW was due to mitochondrion-mediated apoptosis, which may partly explain the anti-cancer activity of Hedyotis Diffusa Willd.
Youchasaponin induces apoptosis of human leukemia Jurkat cells in vitro and its possible mechanism
TLDR
Youchasaponin can inhibit the cell proliferation and induce the apoptosis of human leukemia cells and this effect may be related to the mitochondrial pathway of apoptosis.
Study on Youchasaponin-induced apoptosis of HepG2 cells through the endoplasmic reticulum stress
TLDR
The proliferation of HepG2 cells was significantly inhibited after treatment with Youchasaponin, and meanwhile it activated caspase pathway, induced the fracturing of PARP substrate and furtherly increased the expression of IRE1, and activate Perk,eIF2a, and eEF2.
Sasanquasaponin up-regulates anion exchanger 3 expression and elicits cardioprotection via NO/RAS/ERK1/2 pathway.
TLDR
The findings indicate that SQS might up-regulate AE(3) expression through NO/Ras/ERK1/2 signal pathway to elicit cardioprotection in cultured cardiomyocytes.
XZH-5 inhibits STAT3 phosphorylation and causes apoptosis in human hepatocellular carcinoma cells
TLDR
The inhibition of STAT3 in HCC cells resulted in the induction of apoptosis and reduction of colony forming ability, and suggested that XZH-5 may serve as a lead compound for further development ofSTAT3 specific small molecule inhibitors for HCC therapy.
Effect of Hedyotis Diffusa Willd extract on tumor angiogenesis.
TLDR
The findings suggest that inhibiting tumor angiogenesis is one of the mechanisms by which EEHDW is involved in cancer therapy, and traditional Chinese medicine formulas, which have relatively fewer side effects, are considered to be multi-component and multi-target agents.
A New Saponin from Tea Seed Pomace (Camellia oleifera Abel) and Its Protective Effect on PC12 Cells
TLDR
The results indicated that oleiferasaponin A1 can potentially prevent the H2O2-induced cell death of PC12 cells.
[Antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory actions of tea-leaf saponin].
TLDR
It was found that tea-leaf saponin antagonized the action of leukotrien D4, one of the chemical mediators of inflammatory reactions, and showed relatively high antimicrobial activity against pathogenic dermal fungi.
