Abstract The relationship of dark sand dunes to the polar layered deposits of Mars is investigated by mapping the colors and morphologic settings of the dunes in and near the polar deposits. In the north polar region the dunes have restricted sources in the layered deposits that are associated with are arcuate scarps 10–50 km in length and
